WARNING – There might be a slight trigger near the end of the chapter. I'll put in a warning.
YOUR POV (Finally!!)
The sounds of battle woke me up.
I had just fallen asleep on the soft forest ground, now I was awake. I could hear screams and swords clashing somewhere nearby.
"Walker?" I called out sleepily. When he didn't reply, I began to panic. "Walker!"
"I'm here," Walker's soft voice came from behind me.
"I think there's a battle going on," I said. "We should hide."
"We have to help," he said. "It sounds like the Careers are ganging up on some people."
"And we're supposed to help the people because?" I questioned.
"Come on, Y/N! There are people in trouble! We might make an alliance or something," he argued.
"Alright."
I got up and grabbed my dagger along with a bow and stuffed some arrows into the quiver we'd found earlier. Walker did the same.
"Let's go," he said.
We followed the sounds to a big clear area; the kids from Districts 1, 2, and 4 were in a battle with the duo from 11.
"Come on!" Walker said, and he jumped into a fight with the boy from 2, leaving me on my own.
"Okay," I said aloud, then ran to the boy from 11 to fight off the District 4 boy who was about to stab him.
I stopped his sword with my dagger, and almost immediately the boy turned on me. He yelled something I couldn't make out to someone else, then continued to fight me. I was working overtime to deflect his blade, and I was slowly getting tired.
I had no experience in sword fighting except for the battles I'd read about in Percy Jackson. (Ignore that if you do.) All I knew was I had to keep his sword from touching me. I was fairly sure I was doing everything wrong, but everything I did kept me alive, so I didn't really complain.
Just as my arms felt like they were on fire and my legs were about to give out, someone's hand closed around my forearm. Walker.
But wait... that couldn't be... Walker was over there, now throwing hands with the District 2 boy...
I whipped my head around to see who had grabbed my arm; the last thing I saw before I blacked out was the District 1 boy's knuckles.
Walker POV
The Careers retreated out of absolutely nowhere. One moment the District 2 boy and I were beating the lights put of each other, (though he was apologizing every time he so much as touched me) the next he was running away with the rest of the Careers.
I steadied myself on my feet and brushed myself off, then held up a hand, waiting for Y/N to come over and give me a high five. But I could only see the duo from 11 staring at me.
"Y/N?" I called out carefully, in the same tone she had used earlier. "Y/N!"
My anxiety was acting up; my heart started beating fast and my eyes teared up; I could sense a panic attack. (Based on my personal experiences with anxiety) "Dam!"
Silence.
"Dam!" I called again.
"They took her," the boy from 11 said.
"Yeah, I can see that!" I snapped. I didn't like snapping at people, but I was angry. Angry at myself. How could I let them take her? How could I not notice? Stupid Walker, stupid!
"They're going to kill her," I said, now pacing. "They're gonna kill her!"
"No they're not," the girl said. "They're just baiting you. They want you to come back for her."
"Then they're getting what they want," I said, picking up my dagger from the ground.
"You're not going alone," the girl said. "We're coming with you. No arguing. I'm Jacqueline, this is Mitchell."
She gestured to her friend, who waved.
"How can I trust you?" I asked suspiciously.
"Well, we owe you one," Jacqueline said. "You did save our a-"
"Okay, okay, you can come with," I said, not wanting her to finish the sentence.
"Excellent," she said, beaming. "It was getting boring anyway."
I looked in the direction where the Careers had taken Y/N. In that moment, the end of the song "Ready as I'll Ever Be", an obsession I used to have and still do, seemed to play in my head.
"Hang in there, (Insert nickname with your hair color. Ex: blondie)," I whispered. "We're coming for you."
YOUR POV
I didn't know where I was when I opened my eyes. I saw a big tent in front of me. I tried to move my arms and realized I couldn't; I had been tied to a tree. Then I remembered; the District 1 boy knocking me out. I realized that I was still in the arena, which could only mean one thing; the Careers were taking me prisoner.
For a second there I was confused. But then as it all came back to me, I realized it wasn't as strange as it seemed. Walker was a threat...they might want to get rid of him, and what better way than to lure him in and gang up on him. Then after they did kill him, I realized, my stomach dropping, they would kill me.
Someone stepped out of the tent. I recognized the figure of the District 1 boy.
"Hayden! Zach! She's awake!" he called to the inside of the tent, then started to come to me.
"So..." he said, with an air of someone inspecting a rare discovery, "your ginger friend is alive."
"Okay?" I said, unsure what he was getting at.
"He's gonna come back and get you, isn't he?" the boy questioned.
"So what if he does?" I said, sounding braver than I felt. I knew I couldn't die, but I didn't want to lose. I couldn't leave Walker alone.
⚠️TRIGGER WARNING – A&USE⚠️ (filtering may be cringe but I am traumatized so...)
"If he does, you're gonna stay here like a good little girl and watch as we kill him," the boy said.
"And if I don't?"
"Then this is what's gonna happen."
With that, he started beating the crap out of me. I'm not talking punches; I mean punches, scratches, slaps, kicks, and so much more. I felt like I was being whipped.
"So don't even try to call for help or anything," the boy said, smiling as he went back to his tent.
I slumped down to the ground, still bound to the tree, wishing that I could pass out or fall asleep. But I didn't.
"Walker..." I whispered, too in pain to do much more than that, "please come back..."
⚠️TRIGGER WARNING OVER⚠️
Reminder from your author that this is a safe space, okay? I don't want you to feel triggered or anything, and if anything bothers you don't even be ashamed, tell me in a comment or a PM and I'll change it. Okay? Love you ❤
