I was getting a little tired of being woken up by sounds. It was screeching this time.
This time it took me a little longer to get my bearings. Then I remembered. We were in the tent. Jacqueline and Mitchell were gone. And Walker was missing.
I was beginning to get stressed again, because usually Walker was fast to get up. As I scrambled to get to my feet, he stepped in, his hair soaked.
"Rain," he said unnecessarily. "There are monkeys outside."
"Monkeys?" I asked, sure I hadn't heard him right.
"Killer monkeys," Walker confirmed, shaking his head to dry off his hair. A few drops landed on me. "Sorry."
"S'okay," I said. "So we're waiting them out?"
"When the screeching stops," Walker confirmed. There was the sound of a girl and a boy screaming. But they didn't sound young.
He picked up a sword I recognized as Amandine's off the floor. "If they finish off Linus and the Harry Potter kids... then it's you and me. Linus abandoned the kids, though, so I don't think he'll get out with them.
"Really?" I asked blankly. I hadn't realized that almost everyone was out.
"Yeah," Walker said. Then, as if it was taking him a lot of courage, he said, "If I can lure the two kids to the monkeys, they'll kill the three of us."
"You're not saying... you aren't leaving me, are you?" I said hurriedly, coming to a realization.
"I have to, Y/N," Walker said sadly. "It's the only way." He started out of our shelter.
"Walker, no!" I shouted, my eyes now shining with tears. "You can't leave me!"
It felt crazy. I'd never gotten emotional about this reenactment before. But all of a sudden I felt ready to cry.
"Listen. You can beat Linus. I know you can. We can end this," he said, putting his hands on my shoulders and kneeling so we were face-to-face. How come I didn't notice he had freckles in almost a week and a half being stuck in an arena together?
"I only got this far because of you, Walker! You can't leave me," I pleaded.
He hugged me. I hugged him back, burying my face into his shoulder.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. He had grabbed both Amandine's sword and my dagger, and my bow and quiver were on the other side of the tent. I tried to follow him as he pulled away, but he zipped up the tent from the outside, leaving me trapped. I could hear Walker and the two kids from Harry Potter screaming as the psycho monkeys tore them apart.
"No! No! Walker!" I screamed, pounding on the side of the tent. In my panic I didn't realize I could cut it open with the sword or my dagger, but by the time I realized it was too late. Walker and the kids' screams had subsided. The monkeys' screeching had also stopped. Three canons had sounded. Walker and the last of the kids from the Harry Potter branch were gone.
I dropped to my knees and just sat there, finally understanding why Hayden was so upset when Amandinewas eliminated, except the feeling was purely platonic. I don't know for how long I stayed there, on the ground, staring blankly into space and feeling like the world was over. I knew Walker would've respawned in his homeroom class right now, and was probably being ushered away by the medics, but I wouldn't have gotten this far without him. I would've died of starvation because I didn't want to kill any animals, or I when the Careers had taken me prisoner in order to get to Walker. Heck, if it weren't for him I might've even died in the bloodbath.
But now he was gone. It was up to me to bring the glory to the Percy Jackson branch of Fangirl School. And I didn't plan to disappoint.
