I paced around my room, once, twice, three times. I was waiting on the text from Fiona so she would come pick me up. And then, my phone dinged and there it was. The text message I'd been waiting for for the past twenty minutes.
I grinned, bolting down from my room to the front door and pulling my sneakers on. Without even saying goodbye to my mom, I tore out of the house and to the black SUV in front of it.
The window rolled down and I was greeted with my best friend's smiling face. "Get in," she said. "Quick! Delphine's already on her way there!"
I smiled back, opening the door and sliding in next to Fiona. If Delphine was on her way from her house to the mall already, our chances of getting there first and winning our bet were on the line.
We talked about what we'd been doing for the summer. Normally, during the school year, Fiona and I saw each other every single day, even after school, but she had a really busy schedule this summer, so we couldn't really meet a lot, and video calls just weren't the same.
"By the way, girls, the emails should be coming in today," Fiona's mom said as we started to get close to the mall. "Apparently they're being sent all at once, so you and your friends should get them at the same time."
We knew exactly what she meant by the emails; she was talking about the emails that informed us that we were being invited to return to Fangirl School for Sea of Monsters year. The emails would also include our exam grades from last year, which determined whether we would move on or not. They also had to make sure we'd read the book, which was why they had a link to a little quiz to confirm that we'd read it. Once they got the quiz results, including the time we took answering each question and such, they'd send another email confirming that we were allowed to come back in September.
Once Fiona was done telling me about her summer and I was done telling her about mine, I decided to text Delphine to see if she'd arrived at the mall yet. We were meeting all our friends there; we wanted to be together when the emails came.
Fiona and I ended up getting there first. Before even saying hi, Delphine handed each of us a dollar when she arrived.
We talked a little until the rest came; first Brandon, Fiona's formerly-online friend (they met when they both started at Fangirl School), then Lucas, Delphine's friend-crush, Xavier, and finally the twins Giovanni and Jeveskia.
"I finally read the book," Giovanni said proudly before he'd even said hello. He was a little dim, but really good at chess.
"About time, too," Jeveskia said, rolling her eyes as she came to hug us girls.
"What do you guys think Antonio and Janet have been up to?" Xavier asked after the twins had sat down.
"Probably plotting their revenge," Delphine said jokingly. We'd long since forgiven her for the little catastrophe she'd gotten us in.
