DELPHINE'S POV
(A/N: I honestly thought I wouldn't do someone else's POV again but here we are.)
Janet had been texting me mercilessly ever since Y/N got back from the Hunger Games reenactment. I blocked her phone, of course, and thought she'd never bug me again.
Then maybe a week ago I saw her making a beeline towards me. I turned around and started looking for someone- anyone- to save me. Then I caught sight of Lucas. His shiny blond hair was in his eyes, and he was looking around. Alone. Perfect.
I walked up to him, smiling and trying not to look as nervous as I felt. "Hey, Lucas!"
He jumped, then turned and realized it was just me, and relaxed. "Hey, Delphine."
"Who are you looking for?"
"I- no one. What's up?"
I noticed his hesitation, but pretended not to.
"Well, there's this patch of trees by the gate I really like. You want to come see them with me?"
"Oh. Sure."
We went there and talked all week. I thought I was finally making progress with him.
Then one day he started walking around with Y/N again. I was confused, but Y/N looked incredibly stressed, so I let them be. I went to the bathroom to wet my hair, because you gotta watch that frizz.
Janet followed me in moments later. I turned and glared at her. "What?"
"You're tryna convince me that you're happy with those friends of yours?"
I turned back around and turned on the water at the sink, cupping some in my palm and bringing my hand up to my hair.
"Come on, Delphine. You know I'm right. You can't possibly be happy in a group where your supposed 'best friend' hangs out with your crush on a daily basis."
I stiffened. It was a bit of a touchy subject to me that Y/N and Fiona were best friends. A duo in a trio, one might say. And while they were off being a duo, I was by myself. I didn't have my own best friend.
"They're friends. They're allowed to hang out together," I told her, even though it kind of ticked me off that Y/N and Lucas always hung out with each other during recess.
"But who knows what they're talking about? What if they're talking about you?"
I felt a familiar feeling behind my eyes. Tears.
"They wouldn't be talking about me. Y/N is my friend."
"Is she? Or are you just telling yourself that?"
Maybe it was because I'd gotten my period that morning. Or maybe I was more sensitive than I thought, because when I whirled around to face her, the tears had fallen down.
"Do not try and make me question my friendships!"
"Too late."
She was right. I was questioning everything I knew- about Y/N, about Lucas, even about Fiona.
Were they really my friends if they were a duo in what was supposed to be our trio? Did Lucas even care about me at all, at least before we'd started hanging out one-on-one? Was Y/N really my friend if she both hung out with Fiona more and hung out with my crush, which she knew about very well?
I took a tissue and dabbed at my face, ordering myself not to cry again. I threw it away and left the bathroom, praying Janet wouldn't follow me.
Although it didn't matter anymore if she did.
Because standing there was Lucas and Y/N, hugging. Lucas's beautiful blue eyes caught mine, and he let her go quickly. Y/N looked hurt and confused for a moment, then her eyes landed on me, then traveled over my shoulder to Janet.
They were so busted.

YOUR POV
"Delly... it's not what it looks like!"
This was a problem. Delphine had caught me and Lucas hugging completely out of context. Her imagination could take her places we didn't want her to go.
"Oh, save it!" Delphine snapped, though her voice shook. "I knew I shouldn't have trusted you." And she stalked off.
"Delphine, wait!" I tried, but tears pricked at my eyes. Janet just smiled smugly.
I wiped at my eyes with my fingers. Lucas put his hand on my shoulder. "Y/N, I am so... so sorry... this is all my fault."
"No- I should've been honest with her from the beginning!" My voice gave away to choked sobs.
Not in front of Lucas! Not in front of Janet! I told my brain, but my eyes wouldn't listen.
Lucas hugged me without a word. I tried hard not to soak his shirt, but the waterworks were starting. I had barely managed to go an entire year, 365 days, without causing more drama with Delphine.
"I'm really, really sorry," Lucas said again once I was calmer and he had let go of me. "Seriously- this whole thing is because of me."
"Lucas, no," I said again. "I should've just come clean to her from the start. It was stupid. I was overthinking everything."
"Maybe not everything," he said quietly, looking at Janet. I had no idea what that meant, but I turned to look at her too.
She smirked smugly. "Yeah, still here."
"What were you doing with Delphine?" I demanded. She was so much shorter than me it was almost funny. (A/N: and I'm saying this as a short person.)
"I was just trying to make her see sense. You aren't treating her as you should be," Janet sneered.
"What do you mean?" Lucas asked, stepping forward so he was next to me, his hands in his pockets.
Janet looked him up and down and smirked again. "Well, it's obvious, isn't it? Y/N and Fiona are a duo in a trio. Janet's just their third wheel. They shouldn't be treating her like that."
"It's not my fault Fiona and I are closer. We knew each other first," I argued.
"How about the fact that Delphine doesn't have a real best friend? She deserves one. And I'm a worthy candidate."
"You only want her because Antonio abandoned you," I shot back. "You don't have any other friends."
"I do. I just want Delphine to be among them."
I opened my mouth, prepared to curse like a sailor, but Lucas placed a gentle hand on my arm. "Delphine will never be your friend. She's too smart to be friends with someone who's trying to manipulate her."
"Sure, sure, blondie," Janet said. The bell rang. "I'm going. Good luck with your curly girl."
She walked off just like that.
"What do I do now?" I asked Lucas. "Delphine's upset."
"So are you," he said gently, wiping off a stray tear on my cheek before quickly pulling his hand back. "Talk to her after school if you like. Anytime. Just not while you're both upset. And I'll be there if you want."
"Just be around the corner," I said. "I'll talk to her after school today. And I'll ask Fiona to be there too."
He nodded, and we said goodbye and walked off to our separate classes.
I told Fiona everything. Without sugarcoating a single detail. She was, thankfully, on my side.
"I'll be hiding with Lucas," she promised.
I got through the last few classes just barely. By the time the last bell rang, I took a deep breath.
It was finally time to talk to Delphine.
