Tether Household

Chloe

Dinner had gone by pretty smoothly after my whole intervention thing, there had been no more pointed words and fearful eyes and massaged temples, it was normal. His mum continued to make small talk about what kind of grades I got in school, and seemed particularly interested about the fact that I used to be a cheerleader.

Weird.

Riley's dad didn't speak another word aside from thanking his wife for the meal and kissing her soundly on the lips. That was quite an, interesting sight.

I bade the couple goodbye before hurriedly following Riley out of the house and onto his porch. The moon was out and shining brightly, illuminating our surroundings. It was a very beautiful night.

I didn't know what the purpose of coming out here was, perhaps it was just to escape his parent's watchful eyes? So we leaned against the wooden railing, not speaking a single word to each other the entire time. I didn't mind the silence, of course, but I knew he wanted to say something, and I wished that he would just spit it out.

"Rile-" I began before Riley turned to me and placed a finger on his lips, shushing me and preventing me from continuing. So he wasn't going to speak and I wasn't allowed to either? Nice.

I looked up at him and pursed my lips, half debating whether or not I should just leave. I met his eyes, the cool blue staring down my brown. He looked extremely serious, and I couldn't help but straighten at the intimidating gaze.

"Where do you live?" were the words he spoke, his voice hoarse and hushed. Well out of all the things I was mentally preparing for, I was definitely not ready for that.

Was he trying to get rid of me?

"Not too far, I can walk," I kept my eyes downcast, he was hinting for me to go away, what could I do? I bit my lip, shifting nervously from foot to foot as to not freeze up from the awkwardness.

"Mum! I'm walking Chloe home!" this boy was going to give me a headache one of these days... I could never tell what was going to come next with him, but somehow I didn't mind too much. It was exciting, in a way.

I was either in love with him or very masochistic, personally I preferred the latter.

Riley grabbed my hand and pulled me off the porch, my backpack already slung over his shoulder; when did that get there? We walked along the pavement, the moon illuminating our path. I hadn't realised how late it had gotten until I could see the glowing crescent hanging above my head, casting its cool white light over the entire land.

Letting him continue to pull me along, I kept my silence for a little while longer. I wasn't going to speak until he did, mainly because I had no clue what to say. I was very aware of his large hand around mine, his skin warm and comforting. I looked down and inwardly noted how small my hand looked against his.

"With the way I've been treating you and jerking you around this whole time, I think you should at least know the reason behind it all..." he sounded sad, why? The almost resolved tone of his voice was enough to make me have to battle my conscience that was screaming at me to tell him that he didn't have to tell me anything, just so that he wouldn't be sad. Thankfully I didn't have much willpower in my head either.
