Chloe

It had been a week since Dante and I met Katy in the mall. We didn't gather much from her, she never made any indication that she was coming back to school, she never made any indication of why she had left.

She never even spoke at all.

Throughout the entire encounter, all she had done was smile, nod, and shake her head. It was as if she couldn't speak at all. But I knew that wasn't true, I remember the sound of her voice, she used to be very talkative back in Year 9.

What could have possibly happened to make her so meek...

"Hey Chlo, you know how to do this question?" Dante asked, placing his chin on my shoulder and looking over at my open math book. I searched the rows of completed equations for something similar to the one he was asking for, running my finger over the ink-stained paper and my eyes scanned the writing. We wouldn't have any of the same equations, seeing as how I was in a Year 11 class and he was in a Year 10 one.

"Yeah, you just do it like this," I circled the question with my finger, and looked back at Dante with a smile. His eyes were perplexed as he stared intently at the words written in my rounded handwriting, and I couldn't help but giggle softly at his confusion.

"I don't get it, Chlo, why are you so smart?" Dante moaned, slamming his forehead onto the table and clenching his fist around his pen.

"Come, I'll show you," whether it was instinct or something else, I wrapped my own small hand around his noticeably bigger one-though completely unnecessary-and guided him through the workings of the question. His eyes lit up as he began to understand how to do it, and he turned to me with the biggest ever smile.

It lit up the room, I swear.

"Thank you so much!" He was way too excited for someone who just answered a simple math question, but it was cute in a way.

"It's no problem at all, you know you can ask-" My sentence was cut off by the shrill sound of his phone ringing. At first he looked around us at the other students doing their work or reading books-as if he didn't realise that the sound was coming from him-then his face blanched as he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

He stared at the contact name at the top of the screen and quickly swiped it to answer the call, as if he didn't want anyone to see who it was. That triggered a few bells in my head.

"Are you okay?" He asked the person on the other end of the line, his forehead creasing in his trademark look of concern. "What happened?"

What was happening? Who was he talking to?

"Dante?" I murmured, pulling on the sleeve of his shirt to get his attention. I didn't like the squeezing sensation in my stomach, I wanted it to go away.

"Do you want me to come over?" The sirens were sounding.

"Dante?" I repeated, tugging on his sleeve once again.

He shifted to the side a little, just out of my reach.

"Yeah I'll be right there."

I didn't know who he was talking to, it could be his mum or his dad or maybe even his siblings or... There was nothing for me to be worried about, nothing, I wasn't his girlfriend-
