Chloe

"Dante?" I breathed, my voice hoarse from the crying and my watery-eyed confession. Riley spun around to face me, his eyes narrowed.

"Who is this prick to you?" He asked, gesturing rudely at Dante, his gaze still trained on me. I looked over his shoulder at Dante's perplexed expression, and I felt the familiar sensation of guilt in my belly once more.

"Chloe, are you two...?" He asked, his eyebrows creased and his lips pursed. Riley looked at me expectantly, and I could feel my heart begin to pound hard in my chest.

"No, we're... It's nothing, we were just talking," I mumbled, pulling at the sleeves of my jumper and taking an interest in the indents and grooves on the linoleum.

"Nothing?" Riley scoffed, taking a step closer to me and placing a hand on my cheek. "Do I really not mean anything to you? After all we've been through, after all we've done."

His words were laced with suggestion, and it didn't take long for Dante to pick up on it and turn tomato-red. He took a step towards Riley and grabbed him by the collar-a repeat of last time, really-pulling him away from me and glaring fiercely.

"If you have done anything to Chloe, I will make you regret it," his fingers dug into Riley's shirt, and I could see Riley wince at the sudden pressure around his neck. The two boys stood there for a moment, neither saying a word. It wasn't until I saw Riley draw his hand back that I exclaimed loudly.

"Dante!" It was too late, Riley had already thrown his punch. His fist made sharp contact with Dante's gut, and I watched as my friend doubled over with pain at the impact, clutching his stomach and coughing.

"Riley why did you that!" I shouted, looking over at Dante just in time to see him prepare to launch his own punch. "Both of you! Enough!"

I didn't even stay to see their reactions, didn't even look back. I ran from them, my feet pounding against the floor and creating an awful ruckus. It would be really hard to explain to a teacher why I was running in the hallways after school hours if any of them came to investigate.

I got all the way out to the pavement outside the school when I noticed a strange feeling of lightness on my shoulders-my bag! I must have left it...there. I didn't want to go back, just in case they were still roughing it out over there, but I had homework, and it just wouldn't do to make up an excuse for not doing it.

Decisions are so hard...

"Watch out!" A voice shouted, and I felt an arm wrap itself around my waist-an action that was getting more and more familiar by the second-jerking me backwards. A sudden breeze slapped me straight across the face, and my heart same to a sudden stop.

A car flew by right in front of my nose, and my breath hitched as I came to the sudden realisation of how close I had come to being run over. Unintentionally, I gripped the arm wrapped around my waist, fingernails digging in as I waited for my heart rate to slow.

"Be careful, Chlo, you know better than to be distracted when wandering by a road," the voice said, and spun me around to face its owner.

"Why did you follow me?" I asked, averting my eyes. I was still quite embarrassed about being caught in that awkward position with Riley, after all.
