Chloe

The next day in school was quiet, too quiet almost. I expected name-calling and harassment, not this normalcy, this silence... It wasn't really quiet of course, you can hardly expect a school hallway to be any sort of silent, but I could feel it pounding down on me, mocking me, taunting me.

Riley, Riley, Riley.

His name keeps repeating on and on in my head, and I can't stop seeing his face behind my eyelids... I don't like him or anything, especially after he literally forced himself on me yesterday. I don't like him, I don't.

"Chloeeee... Chloeeee..." I looked up from the floor and met Katya's inquisitive gaze, her blue-green eyes questioning my strange behaviour. I never usually acted so down, even if I was upset I knew how to hide it from everyone else. Why was he affecting me so much, I shouldn't let him affect me, I shouldn't.

"Oh, hey Katya. When did you get here?" I asked, shifting the weight of my bag from one shoulder to the other. Katya's expression turned dark, and I realised immediately that I had said the wrong thing.

"Chloe, I have been walking beside you for the past ten minutes," she whirred around to face me and I gulped at her murderous looking gaze. "What is up with you? You're not responding to anything I say and you look like someone ran over your cat-- Oh no is Mr. Fluffy okay?"

"For gods sake Katya I've told you before, I don't have a cat called Mr. Fluffy!"

"Then explain what he was doing in your diary!" She pointed an accusing finger at me.

"That diary was from when I was five! And I was talking about a stuffed cat doll called Mr. Fluffy!" I barked at her, drawing the attention of everyone in the hall. I shrunk into a ball and blushed a bright red until everyone turned away.

"I'm not going to believe that, even your mom talked about a Mr. Fluffy!"

"I was a very imaginatively active child!"

A soft giggle came from somewhere to my right, and Mikaela's soft golden locks caught the light just right as she tilted her head at their weird conversation. Combined with her adorably sweet smile and the ceiling light forming a halo behind her head, she looked unmistakably like an angel.

"Woah Mikaela, why do you look so pretty today?" Katya said, her lack of a mouth filter allowing her to spit out the words that I myself couldn't bring myself to say. Mikaela frowned and scowled at us, her angelic aura shattering within a second.

"Are you saying I don't look pretty on regular days?" Her tone was dry and her eyebrows raised, daring Katya to answer.

"I never said that, you just assumed," such a smart-mouth answer...

"Well, Alex just invited me to go watch that new movie with him," Mikaela swooned, the dreamy smile returning to her face and her eyes lighting up at the prospect of going on a date with Alex.

"Oh em gee girl! Way to go, I can't believe he finally..." Their voices trailed off and the entire corridor seemed to hush as a familiar presence made itself known. Ladies and gentlemen, Riley Tether has arrived.

I averted my eyes and stared intently at the couple making out at their locker, then looked away as I realised how creepy that was. Unconsciously, I turned my head to sniff at the sweet aroma of cologne and spearmint, looking directly at Riley's expressionless face as I did.

What happened to the smirks and winks at all the mooney-eyed girls in the hallway? What happened to his arrogant stance as his friends asked him about football practice? At one point he looked up from his shoes and stared directly into my eyes, his own softening for a brief second before he looked away once more.

What was that? I must have imagined that, a trick of the light...

Yeah that's definitely it.

"Hey, Chloe," a lilting voice called out to me from behind, making me whirl around and face its owner. I saw Dante running up to me from quite a ways away, and I laughed as he barrelled through an entire mass of students to get to me. He literally flew into me when one boy-which I noticed was standing by Riley-shoved him away, and the two of us were sent crashing to the floor.

"Dante... You're... Heavy..." I choked out, shoving at Dante's shoulders in an attempt to remove him from his position on top of me. From what I could see, his cheeks were as red as tomatoes by the time he got off, and he shakily extended a hand to help me get up.

"Sorry Chlo, I must have tripped or something," Dante scratched the back of his head, grinning sheepishly at me all the while. I laughed at his antics, brushing some dirt off of the back of my skirt before retrieving my bag from its position on the floor.

"Hey Mikaela, you ready?" I turned back to look at my momentarily forgotten friend, but all she did was hold two thumbs up at me and gesture towards Dante's hand. I stuck my tongue out at her once I realised what she meant.

I headed towards Dante and motioned for him to walk with me, all the while forcing down a rising blush. Just as I was about to reach him, a hard object slammed into my shoulder, sending me stumbling straight towards a locker. Thankfully Dante caught my hand right before I head-butted the metal.

"What's that guy's problem?" He muttered, jerking his chin at the tall frame of a guy with honey blonde hair. Riley... Was he the one who bumped into me? Why would he do that? Why was he being such a douchebag?

"I have no idea."

"Maybe I should keep holding on to your hand, to keep you from falling again."

I looked back up at Riley's gradually disappearing form, then back at Dante's concerned and smiling face.

"Yeah, maybe you should."

~~~-*-~~~
"Chloe, what happened to you yesterday?" Mikaela asked me outside of our English Lit class with the Year 11's, linking our arms together so that I couldn't escape. I shrugged her off and sniffed, which betrayed--unwittingly--that I was hiding something.
"Sorry for snapping at you-"
"You're avoiding the question."
I sighed loudly and she pursed my lips, probably wondering what was so bad that I couldn't tell even her.
"It's nothing really..."
"Don't bullshit me, Chloe," she frowned, "you know what, just talk to me when you're done being all secretive."
I didn't even last ten minutes. After the class had began and the teacher began scribbling down notes on the board, I slipped a tiny folded note into Mikaela's notebook. Questioningly, she opened it up and fished out the tiny strip of paper. She unfolded it, eyes widening as she read the words written upon it.
Riley kissed me
Mikaela whirred to face me-ignoring the fact that we were both in a class full of older students-and exclaimed, "huh!?"
Guys, guys, this took so damn long, because I literally just deleted everything and rewrote it. It was so cringey and stupid and idiotic and unrealistic... I apologise immensely.
But anyways, I hope I made it better now :) Enjoy
