"I like you."

I didn't know how to respond. Was I supposed to say I like you too or something? What was I going to reply to that with?

Oh, Dante, for many years I have waited anxiously for those very words, and finally hearing them fills me with indescribable joy.

Nah.

"For the entire year or so that I've known you," oh wonderful he's continuing, "I thought that I had to force my way into your feelings, that I had to work to get you to notice me..."

He looked at me expectantly. Oh god, he wants me to say something.

Potatoes! No, that's wrong.

"No one has ever...confessed to me before, I'm not really sure what to say," that's the way, straightforwardness is key. Judging by the amused look on Dante's face, I think it actually was. "I'm sorry, it's just that, I didn't know you felt that way about me, and I've really looked at you that way before either..."

I just had to open my mouth again. I was preparing myself for hurt and maybe even a few tears, but not...laughter?

"Of course not, I was a nerdy little boob last year, and this year all you've been looking at is Riley," his eyes twinkled and his smile was genuine, making that warm feeling in my chest expand even further. The last bit kind of soured my mood though, I didn't really want to bring Riley into all this... "So that's why, from now onwards, start being aware of me.

I blushed and looked away, unable to meet his eyes after such a soft-hearted statement. It wasn't that I was uncomfortable or anything, it was just that hearing those words come out of a guy like Dante, was a little too sweet for my heart to handle as of yet.

"Little by little, day by day, just look at me in a different light, okay?" He finally broke his stare, gazing off into the setting sun. Time had flown by so quickly, its was hard to fathom. "I want you to really know me before you-"

Maybe it was the mood, maybe it was just an impulse, but something inside me drove me to lean forward, grasp his cheeks in my hands and pull his face to meet mine, our lips touching as we met in the middle. It was perfect, the sun was setting and the birds were chirping, I could taste the remnants of his popsicle on his mouth and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest.

This was what a first kiss should be...

"I'll see you in school," I smiled, kissing Dante once more on the cheek before slinging my bag over my shoulder and dashing towards my house. I was glad that the sun cast a red glow over the entire area, because that way he couldn't see the blush blooming on my face.

The next day in school I went about my business as usual, attending my classes and whatnot whatnot. I continued on with my regular schedule, not even a second of it getting disrupted until I saw him.

Dante.

He was with some of his friends and they were laughing about something stupid one of them had done over the summer holidays. One friend was caught in a headlock by the other, and he was just standing a little ways behind them, smiling at their antics. We locked gazes and his face flamed, his fingers touching his lips tentatively as he looked me straight in the eye.

After a moment he seemed to realise what he was doing and turned away from me, inspecting the notice board along the walls in great detail as he and his friends walked past me. I stared at his back in confusion, wondering why he was acting so off.

Oh right, because I kissed him. Was that how I was acting after Riley kissed me?

I shrugged to myself and prepared to continue on to the cafeteria, where I would be meeting up with Katya and Mikaela for lunch. Normalcy, that was a good thing. The sound of feet pounding against the floor had me turning at the last second to look at Dante's rapidly approaching figure.

"I'm sorry! I did it wrong!" My eyebrows flew up, and I steeled myself just in time for him to crash into me at full speed. I choked as his arms wrapped themselves around my neck in a very girly fashion, clinging to me like a vice.

"What?" I squeaked, prying his arms off of me so that choking to death would no longer be an option.

"I tried to act normal so that it wouldn't be awkward, but then you looked so pretty that I got kinda flustered and I started thinking about yesterday and-" he took a few deep breaths, "that's why just now I did it wrong, the cold shoulder was mean of me."

I giggled. "You're funny."

He blushed once again. "Anyways, I'm apologising because I didn't want you to have even a smidgen of a doubt in me," he scratched the back of his head, "and I'm still waiting for your answer!"

And then he turned, and with a goodhearted wave, ran off to join his friends. The warmth from before was back again, and I didn't mind the sensation at all.

"You did what?" Katya exclaimed, waving her spoon about and splashing quite a few passersby with the soup that she was drinking with it, even Mikaela sourly picked up a napkin and wiped at her cheeks.

"You heard me..." I mumbled, staring down at my vegetables and lazily pushing them around the plate.

"I know, but I want you to say it again so that I know I wasn't dreaming!" Ever the overdramatic...

"I said, I kissed Dante," that was what broke her, Katya erupted into a squeal and happily wrapped her arms around Mikaela's thin shoulders, rocking from side to side. Mikaela was smiling gently at Katya's motions, but eventually peeled her off and set her to the side.

"My baby's growing up!" Katya latched herself onto me and fake sobbed into my shirt, drawing the unwanted attention of several other students currently milling about the cafeteria. We got a few strange looks but I sighed in defeat, reaching over and patting the still (fake) sobbing Katya on the head.

Mikaela was laughing at us from the other side of the table, all the while chewing happily on her bowl of jell-o. Katya released me and soon enough, she and I were laughing our heads off too. There were a few more strange looks but I didn't care.

I was happy.
