The fourth of July in cousins is all about traditions. Susannah decks out the whole house, the dads come up for the weekend. The boys steam clams and shoot off fireworks. All the other fourth of July's, i was just tagging along. But this year, i have friends. I have plans.

"can i finish your milk?" jeremiah said eyeing the rest of what's in my bowl

"here" i said handing it to him laughing

"yo i'm going to go wash the clams did u get the lighter fluid" connie asked walking into the kitchen.

"uh ye it's already on the beach" jere replied

"Are we done with the portrait yet?" steven asked as him and susannah come walking back from the garden.

"yeah for today, but you do look good in a dress shirt. Which makes me think if lexi doesnt hurry up and find a escort soon, you should take her" susannah said smiling

"ew no way that's gross hes my brother" i said in disgust but also disappointed that i know jere won't go with me.

"yeah, yeah, yeah no i'm already going with shayla" steven explained

"to the debutante ball" mom questioned as she walked into the kitchen

"as an escort?" mom said confused

"wrap your head around it, mom alright, shaylas coming over tonight with nicole, and gigi, so you'll get to meet her" steven said sitting down, pouring himself some cereal.

"belly did.." steven said looking down as he knew how i felt about gigi

I think jere could tell i was mad and upset, because he had slipped his hand onto my thigh rubbing it with his thumb gently, under the table.

"it's going to be okay, i'll be by your side for the whole night i promise" he whispered into my ear giving me a smile

"oh and don't forget lexi Miss covington's first dance rehearsal in a few days, so tick tock." susannah said looking at me

"uh i'm sure i'll find someone.." i say quietly

"wait are you wearing makeup" Susannah asked mom changing the topic

"yeah she's wearing makeup" suzie added

"oh my, she definitely is" steven bursted out laughing

"so what? we're having a party" mom said making excuses

"mhmmmm i'm sure it has nothing to do with john coming to the clam bake" susannah joked eyeing mom

"oh please, the husbands always come for the fourth" mom said

"he's not your husband anymore" belly said walking into the kitchen to join us

"oops yeah, ex husband" she chuckled

"you know i still don't understand why u invited dads girlfriend" steven said annoyed

"her name is victoria and your dad wanted you guys to meet her" mom told us

"oh and belly i need you to make up the guest bed" mom eyed belly

"wait dad and victoria are staying here? in the room next to mine?!" bells groaned

"i'm sure they won't have loud sex" jeremiah joked
