2022

Oscar sits on the opposite side of my couch, facing me fully but refusing to meet my eyes. The expression on his face is impossible to read, the only thing I'm able to decipher is the fact it's not a very positive look.

He asked this morning if he could see me, being in Miami with Alpine made it possible for him to do so. He showed up here looking down and hasn't been clear on why.

"Osc? You okay?" I reach a hand over to his knee, my thumb brushes back and forth over the material of his pants in an attempt to comfort my boyfriend.

He stares down at the motion of my thumb, unresponsive for longer than I would've preferred, but I don't rush his answer.

A long sigh is drawn out from his lips. "I-" he chokes on his words, clearing his throat before speaking up again. "I don't think we should see each other anymore." His voice is tight and strained like it's a struggle for him to get the words out.

I retract my hand slowly back to my side, standing up once it reaches that point. I don't know how to handle his words, all I know is I can't be as close to him as I am right now. I walk into the kitchen, which can be fully seen from the living room but he follows me into the space anyway.

I grab a water bottle from the fridge and down half of it before he speaks again, now once again in my direct line of sight. "Sav," his words are gentle, leaving the rest of the sentence to hover in the space between us.

He drops the previous sentence completely, starting a new one. "I'm sorry." You can tell in his eyes, he really means the words but they mean nothing to me right now.

He reaches out for me, but I react quickly, a hand up to stop him. "You can save your apologies, Oscar. I don't want to hear them." I walk past him, still trying to put a good amount of distance between the two of us.

I stop in the middle of the living room, turning to see him stood at the entrance of the kitchen. "You want to break up? Fine. Leave then. Goodbye!" I say it all quickly and rather aggressively, gesturing towards the door to solidify my words.

He doesn't move, instead standing still, completely dumbfounded. "That's it?" He questions, I pick up on a hint of confusion in his voice.

"What do you mean 'that's it'? There hasn't been a single problem with us in the two years we've been together and now you show up here suggesting we end it." I take a deep breath. "What do you want me to say? You've obviously already made up your mind so just go." Breaking up with him is the last thing I want but I won't be the one to beg on my knees when he clearly doesn't want to stay.

I turn my gaze to the floor. Tears have started to collect in my eyes and I'm not willing to let him see them. I believe it will show him the hesitance I don't want to display, so I hide it.

He sighs and his footsteps travel to the front door. "Baby-" He cuts himself off, catching his mistake. It's like one last arrow through the heart. A final blow. "Savannah, it's all so complicated, but none of it is your fault." I know the words are meant to be comforting, but they do little in terms of delivering the feeling. First his use of 'baby', then the use of my full name combined create for a disaster in terms of emotions. The only thing that holds me together is the arms I've wrapped around myself.

I inhale, it's noticeably shaky and I curse it for being so. "Please, just go." Any attempt at hiding my emotions fails as they're now on full display through my wobbling words.

A faint click confirms he's gone. I'm left alone with the tension still floating through the room. It envelopes me completely and causes the floodgates to open.

I'm unable to stand anymore, my knees crumbling under the weight of my heavy heart. I fold in half, sitting on the carpeted floor with my knees pulled up into my chest.

The reality of the situation sets it, the memory replays in my head again and again, adding a new layer of heartbreak each time I recall his words. It's a loop destined to destroy me.
