LULAMA
I'm about to function on three hours of sleep but I feel good, I feel energized and all it took was a text from my soon to be husband saying he can't wait to see me tomorrow and a hot shower. Now I'm up and ready to go.
I put on another maxi dress and headwrap then my slippers and I head out. I know I have very limited time outside this morning. Adi is already busy outside with the other ladies and when I step out I hear my sister giving out instructions left right and center. I start helping around and time passes so fast, pretty soon, the sun is up and it's a lot more busier because we're now counting down to the visitors arriving. I haven't seen my brother around but I figure that maybe he's just out running errands. Mom has also been busy so we haven't spoken today.
When she sees me, she beams with so much excitement when she sees me and she immediately walks up to me "I can't believe the youngest of my children is now grown,"
"Does that mean you'll stop calling me Masesi now?" I mess with her and she laughs it off.
"That's not happening, you'll always be my Masesi, how are you feeling? Are you good? "
"I'm good," I say and she takes my hand and walks back with me back to the house and straight to her bedroom. She sits on the bed and I pill the vanity chair.
"I know this hasn't exactly been an easy sailing week..."
"It's been crazy," I say honestly.
"It has, and I know it's very unfair to you. I just don't want you to let negative feelings and thoughts lead you this weekend. Here I will be able to watch over you and see to it that you are fine, but you know I won't be coming with you tomorrow, so I want you to promise me that you'll focus on nothing except your special day, "
" Don't worry about me, mama. I'm fine, I really am. I made peace with the Kenneth situation a long time ago and it's not something that gets me done anymore. I just wish he doesn't show up today, I've had enough drama with that man, "
" He's an unpredictable one, but we can only hope for the best anir? " She asks and I nod. Whoever would have thought that one day, having your parent not attend would be seen as rhe best. Yah noh, this life is something else.
" Now that that's out the way, today you're not running around. You're going to sit still and let everyone run around for you. I still can't believe that my little Lully is becoming someone's wife. Time does fly indeed," She says excitedly.
"I can't believe it either," I whisper playfully.
There's a knock on the door and mom yells for the person to enter. My brother walks in and comes to stand next to me
"Awu hubutele kwin?" [where did you go so early in the morning?]
"I went to see your ex husband,"
Mom and I both frown at this "what is it now?" She asks.
"I just wanted to make sure he understands that there will be consequences if he dares try to cause havoc on this day. Both him and his wife," He says simply and we are both left wondering. My brother often has little to say but when he speaks he makes sure. He also has this protective thing going on and maybe it's because he had to step up and be that male figure in mine and my sister's life too but if he says he went there and made himself clear, I have no doubt. I know for sure those two will not be setting foot here today.
"And how did it go?" mom asks him.
"We reached an understanding, He doesn't bother us, I don't bother him,"
"Alright, that's minus one thing to worry about, let me go check what's happening outside," She gets up and leaves us together.
I leans on her dresser and crosses his arms then looks at me all serious "This is it,"
