BANGIZWE
We are almost at the location when I get a call from Liyana
"Liyana,"
"Bhuti, you have to come back!" she says in a panicked tone.
"What's going on?"
"The cops are here and they just arrested Nandi,"
Fuck!
"Are they still there?"
"They are leaving, Detective Hlungwani won't listen to anything. I'll take Lihle and follow them,"
"We'll meet you there," I quickly look for a U-turn point and tell Nkosi to dial Nigel, my attorney. I quickly bring him up to speed and he tells me he will meet me there. I check the time and feel dread rush through me when I see that it's 16:35, courts might already be close. Dammit Xolani!
"Maybe we'll get lucky," Nkosiyabo says, clearly thinking the same thing I'm thinking.
I jump off the car as soon as it's on park and rush in the police station. I look at Nigel and I just know "Where is she?"
"Holding cells, the courts are closed,"
"Don't tell me that, there's got to be something you can do, what about after hours bail?"
"The nature of the crime she's being charged with disqualifies her for that,"
"So what the fuck does that mean? She's not sleeping in here, Nigel!"
"The courts will only be open on Monday, beyond that-"
"I don't think you're hearing me. You get paid to straighten up shit like this, my wife is not sleeping behind bars, I don't give a fuck which judge you have to beg and sweet talk because it's not even been half an hour since they closed but make it fucking happen! "
"What's this commotion about?" the bloody detective struts in with his smug face. "Mr. Mdlalose, how do you do?"
"What the hell do you think?"
"I thought you'd be happy that I'm finally making progress with your wife's case, we are finally getting somewhere,"
"You call this progress?"
"Yes I do. I got the person who orchestrated the entire thing. We have concrete evidence, plus motive for her actions. Maybe go home and share those news with your wife whose currently mourning the loss of her pastry shop instead of being in here trying to fight for a criminal whose clearly going to get what she deserves,"
" You have no fucking clue what you're on about, "
" Don't I? Or are you simply blinded by the fact that she's your wife too? I understand how this can get tricky Mr. Mdlalose but you can't be biased when-" he doesn't get to finish before I let loose and send my fist flying across his face, before I know it, I have two cops holding me back.
" Detective, I'm truly sorry for this. You're right, my brother is not in the right state of mind right now, please forgive him," Nkosiyabo pleads and the detective takes a long hard look at me.
"Go home, Mr. Mdlalose. Your wife will be detained until Monday, if you still feel so strongly about getting her out of here then you can apply for her bail then... And Mr. Mdlalose, the next time you fail to contain yourself like this I won't hestitate to put cuffs on you too, "He grits the walks away.
" Let's go," Nkosiyabo says lowly.
" The detective knew exactly what he was doing when he arrested your wife specifically today at around this time, he left no chance for us to get an open court and it's in hopes that she will confess to these charges. Trust me Mr. Mdlalose, I can get her out and I will but I can only do it on Monday, "
