CHAPTER 7
“So, yeah, uh…”
There is always one person that someone truly fears. David Cam is terrified; the school bully is shitting himself, even the king of the lions is afraid of her; their mother. Even I, with my masses of ‘SWAG!’ was afraid of my mother.
“I... uh… hi, mum.”
Next to me, Noah was shaking with laughter; at least he was trying to hide his laughing with the hand in front of his face. Dick face. I elbowed him in the side making him splutter out his laughs, they soon died down as with a wounded look he placed a hand to where my bony little elbows had been. It was my turn to smirk as I looked back at the laptop screen sat in front of me, Noah, Max and Mr Johnson.
I chewed my lip trying to think what to say next. “Uh… so mum, how are things?”
“Jodi,” my mum rasped through the computer screen. “I’m shattered, I’m getting a migraine, I need to sleep so what the hell is going on so I can get back to bed,” I pulled at Ben’s blazer sleeve trying to think of how this was going to go down. What if mum doesn’t let me stay, what if she got me on the next flight home? I looked over at Johnson helplessly and with a small, stiff nod he opened his mouth and began.
“Hello, Ms Thomlinson, it’s Jodi’s head teacher, Mr Johnson here. Sorry for troubling you in such early hours of the morning but there is an important… occurrence that has to be discussed.”
“Right,” my mum whispered through the speakers on my laptop. “Well, please, go ahead,” she did sound knackered and I was happy that we didn’t go on video call because I knew what she looked like when she was like this and it wasn’t the prettiest of things. So instead of seeing my mum looking pale and ill with dark circles under her eyes and her hair all over the place the four of us saw her profile picture of me, Nick and her at the beach a few years back, and to my horror it was one of the only ones my family possessed with me in a bikini.
“Well, this morning a dorm room caught fire, it was your daughters-”
Mum seemed to jump out of her half-slumber and was now reaching ten on the panic-o-metre. “Shit, Jodi, are you alright, sweetheart?”
“I can see where she gets that lady like tongue from,” again, I elbowed Noah in the ribs for his comment before telling mum that I was perfectly fine in a cheery voice. She cooed an ‘alright then’ and Johnson continued with the matter at hand.
“As the room has to be investigated forensically and then undergo renovations Jodi will need a place to stay whilst all of this takes place. We then went and asked Jodi and her roommate, Miss Gold, if they have an idea of where to stay. The problem is, Miss Gold took the last dorm in the girls’ building.”
“So, what’s happening to Jodi?”
“After a lot of meetings and discussions we have been allowed to have Jodi stay in a boy’s dorm room whilst her dorm room is out of reach. Jodi was the one to come up with idea and now the board of governors and the New York Committee that is specifically for education and child well fare are on board with the arrangements. All we need is for the parents of you and the two boys chosen to accept the idea and she will be in the clear to stay at Liberty Academy.”
“What happens if I or their parents refuse the idea?”
“MUM!” I yelped jumping out of the seat. How could she?
