CHAPTER 23

“Noah, this is formal,” I hissed as he walked me into the gym that had been transformed into a fairy’s paradise. It wasn’t that I was dressed like a rat or anything, more that I wasn’t in a tight, shiny cocktail dress like the other girls. I had on a baggy flapper dress that literally hung off me a 1920s headdress keeping my bombshell under control and – of course – my grey Docs covered my feet.

“Well, I think you look hotter than every girl here.” Snorting, I turned back to look at Noah who was looking very fetching in jeans that had been ripped to smithereens and my Oasis band t. “I would actually call you beautiful if I was a pussy.”

“Only real men call girls beautiful, right Max?” I elbowed my other roommate in the ribs but he was too far in the land of ‘Where-is-my-Maddie’ to be listening to our conversation. Without answering his eyes settled on his ruby of a prize and went into the crowd to get to his cherry red treasure.

“Whatever,” Noah grunted, looking disgruntled. His own eyes locked on something and turning to give me an icy stare went towards the crowd like my other roomie just had. “I’m hitting the alcohol.”

Where the hell would he find alcohol at a school dance?

Shrugging, I decided to ignore the feeling his cold eyes gave me and kept to the walls, keeping away from the grinding mosh pit at all costs.

Ten minutes later I was still walking around the inner perimeter of the room, passing the drinks table twice whilst listening to chart toppers that were vibrating around the room. I was keeping myself occupied by rolling a can of pop in my hands and whispering the words to the songs I knew.

I was bored and this very much felt like my primary school discos; I used to swing off the gym bars with a girl in my year and sing along to the songs whilst the cool kids danced on the lino and the cooler kids played snakes on their Nokias.

You’re acting like a wallflower again, Jodi.

I sighed as I rolled the cool can through my sweaty fingers again.

I don’t need to go and dance, remember what happened the last time I danced with someone grudgingly.

I took a sip of the coke.

Choose someone who doesn’t act like a lip rapist.

But am I just doing this to prove a point?

Nope, you’re doing it to have fun and not be the stickler on the side.

I finally decided that there was no point talking to myself and looked for the boys instead. After one wrap of the room I couldn’t find Marcus, Jonah, Simon or Noah, and Max was too wrapped up in Maddie to have a jig with me.

With this being the case I decided to grab the first boy who I laid eyes on and ask him to dance with me. There were a group of guys just ahead, all hooded up and looking kind of dodgy, looking closer there was one handing out…

Okay, so maybe not any of them.

I stepped back and started to move away from the drug dealing and started going on the prowl for someone to clean away the name Wallflower from my brain and to actually make me smile since Noah left me at the beginning of the night.
