CHAPTER 34
The last few days of May went slowly; so goddamn slowly. With Jodi not around there was no one to talk to, no one to walk with, no one to play guitar to. She talked to the guys; she would come over to our table and stand and talk but would profusely ignore me, keep her back to me and blank me whenever I looked her way. So, I stopped looking her way.
Darcy had me busy though; when he wasn't pestering me about studying for inter-school tests he had Charlie after me. Charlie had me helping him and Coach with the first years trying for the team. Hours and hours I spent trying to get the scrawny runts to be as competent as the ones born with the brawn of football players.
Like tonight; I stared down at the possible team who were all progressing through sit-ups. Charlie stood next to me, closer to the well-built members, arms crossed in the same manner as me; hands holding elbows.
They were quite decent. Charlie’s lot were obviously avid football fans from football centred families. Their dads would have been tough, their moms supportive. Their sisters would have been dragged to games to wave a school coloured flags whilst their brothers were following in the others footsteps or already running on the muddy field in high school or college teams.
“Go to Marcum,” Charlie’s eyes were trained on a weaker one of my group. I smiled grimly and made my way over. Josh Marcum reminded me of myself when I wrote my name on the sign-up sheet two years ago; he had little muscle and was shaking violently as he went for another push up.
I squatted down in front of him hands clasped and with straightening his arms he pulled himself up, throwing his hair out of his eyes to look at me. “Hey, Man,” I said. He grunted and brought himself down slowly to the worn ground. “Marcum, if ya start from your waist and roll up your back down there’s less strain on your back.”
“Thanks, Noah,” he breathed as he did as told. I nodded and went to get up but he stopped me by saying my name again.
“Yeah, Man?” I flopped down onto my a5s.
“You’re taking your girl home again for the holidays?”
I found myself smiling at the guys Bieber cut that was draping over his face and brushing the ground when he came back to the floor. “Get a haircut, Man,” I laughed as I got back to my feet, leaving the asshole laughing.
“You cool, Noh?” Charlie said and I found myself laughing even though I wanted to snap at him not to call me that. I nodded and told him that I’d sorted Josh out. Charlie nodded and surveying to see that they were all okay with the drill he turned his back to them and looked at me. “So, what are you doing this summer?”
I rolled my eyes; was everyone wondering about how the next three months of mine would be spent? I ran my hands through my hair a few times, trying to brush off the frustrations. “I don’t know.” I honestly didn't want to think about it.
A month with Jodi was living hell… by the time fall rolled around again I would probably be rotating my head and crab-crawling down the stairs.
“That bad?” I smirked but it felt bitter on my lips. I really didn't want to be talking about this. “But I guess you get to see your hot sisters again, good things!” he laughed as I looked at him in horror. “Dude, the funny thing is you can’t say anything about Danny being ugly – she’s your twin.”
