Chapter 23: Fallen Angel (One)

Mayra's POV
"Argh!" Mare groaned as he pulled his own hair out of frustration. "Why does it always have to be a failed mission for us?" he asked.

"Cheer up, Mare. Maybe that case is just unlucky, you might have a lucky one next time," Xari said to him with a smile.

We are on a patio behind the Furrer Mansion. I am enjoying my cup of tea while Mare is still bragging about our failed case.

"Still, it's unfair! What kind of hotel is that? You still need to rent a room and you waited for a couple of weeks before you actually see the gem? Are they insane?"

"Technically not," I replied and put down the empty cup. "I suppose that they just did that for the gem's protection as well."

"But it still has been stolen," Mare replied. "I mean, it's obvious that they just wanted it to be theirs." I could see him rolling his eyes. "But what am I curious about is what is Sakura doing there?"

I could see a glimpse that Xari's eye color changed. "Sakura?" she asked. Her smile faded and her nose scrunched.

Mare looked at her with innocence. "Yes. Sakura."

"And who is it, I may just ask?"

"She is our childhood friend. We've been friends with Mayra since middle school," Mare answered, still looking at Xari with innocence. "She used to help me find pieces of information about Mayra when she has been kidnapped by Papa," Mare pointed at me. "She's helpful in her own way."

"Oh really..." The tone of voice lowered down as she formed a little smirk on her lips. "Good for you na nagkaroon ka na ng jowa, Mare."

Mare's eyes widened in shock. "Huh? No, she's not my—"

"Nah, don't deny it. I know naman na sa tagal-tagal ninyo magkasama, you developed some feelings for her," Xari said.

"Don't joke around, Xari. It's not funny," Mare said.

"I'm not," Xari said. "And what makes you think I'm joking? It's fine na magkajowa ka. I don't mind. You're not even mine after all..." The last sentence became a whisper.

"But I am yours," Mare replied which made me look at him. Xari looked at him in shock.

"W-What?" she asked confusingly. Mare didn't answer and just looked away. His face is red. "What did you say again, Mare?"

He bit his lip and turned his back to us. "N-Nothing," he said before he left us on the patio, running away to the mansion.

I smiled as I stared at where my dear brother ran away.

Mare's POV
Damn! I shouldn't have said that out of the blue! Now, what will Xari will think of me?

"What are you doing here, Olivia?" I stopped in my tracks and looked to the door on my left. It was slightly opened with the lights on in the room.

I tilted my head in confusion, wondering if I heard the voice wrong.

"Don't you miss me, darling?" a woman's voice echoed in the room. She chuckled. "Oh, I forgot. Hindi pala ako ang gusto mong makita."

That voice! It is Olivia!

I silently walked beside the door, peeking slightly at the slightly opened door, and listened to their conversation.

"If I ever found out na nasaktan si Mavis because of your pathetic reasons, I will assure you, Olivia. You will not see the day."

I'm sure of it. That's Papa's voice.
