There stood Cedric, which immediately informed me on why Fred had stormed off so fast. I guess the bad blood between them was more fiery than ever. Things were still good between me and Cedric, however since the incident things had gotten more awkward. We would still study together sometimes and I would even get invited to the occasional Hufflepuff party, but things were kinda different. "Hi y/n." Cedric said with an awkward smile.
"Hey, Ced. What brings you here?" I asked leaning against the doorframe, his demeanor seemed more awkward than usual. He usually had a pretty suave facade that was even more amplified when he was around his friends. No one in Hogwarts could deny that he was definitely the resident pretty boy of the school. That image was especially visible with the Hufflepuff quidditch jersey he adorned, his brown curls were slightly wet and he smelt like fresh rainfall as he placed his hands in his pockets.
"Oh um it's a bit of a funny situation actually. But uh- how have you been? Were you and Fred hanging out?" His change of subject wasn't as smooth as he tried to pull off. He definitely had something up his sleeve. I decided to ignore it for the time being though, maybe it would ease the tension.
"Oh yeah we were talking, it was nothing though," my eyes couldn't help but trace the pathway Fred had taken when he left the room "but yeah, I've been doing good, I studied a lot of my divination work this morning."
"Oh that's great! I love catching up on my classes during the break. It helps when there isn't any other classes to worry about."
"Do you want to come in?" I asked my hand pointing towards the couch.
"Oh, yeah that would be great." His eyes had widened at first, but luckily his shocked expression had faded into a gentle smile. We made our way towards the common room couch. The red fabric feeling more barren because of Fred's absence. Nonetheless, I did always like the extravagant decor of the common room. I took a seat on the couch where I had been before we had gone to answer the door.
I noticed that Cedric had glanced at the spot on the couch next to me, his eyes unsure. He ultimately decided to sit in the chair that Fred had once claimed. "I've never been in here before." He chuckled while looking around the room. His eyes glazing over each and every detail. "You've been in the Hufflepuff common room, right?" He asked with curious eyes.
"Yeah a couple times! Y'know when you asked me to come to a couple of the parties." I giggled. He was obviously nervous but I still couldn't tell what he was on about.
"Oh right! Oh my god I'm so stupid, I feel like my brain has been scrambled recently haha."
"I really liked your common room, it's always so homey."
"Yeah I've always liked that part of it. Your common room though, it's so... regal."
"Oh regal? I guess I've never thought about it that way." I claimed looking around the room once again. The gold details did give it a different shine that the other rooms didn't have. "Cedric?" I questioned, folding my hands in my lap. I positioned myself, my whole body was facing him.
"Y/n?"
"I really don't mean to sound rude when I ask this but, why are you here? You seem kinda nervous." Cedric had also changed his position, he was on the edge of the chair, his elbows resting on his knees with his hands folded. "I'm sorry this is probably really strange of me, usually we just run into each other in the corridors and now I'm here, in your common room just blubbering about."
"Cedric it's fine."
"Y/n, I wanted to ask you if you would like to go to the ball with me?" His gaze was hopeful but I could see the soft fear behind his eyes. I never thought that a student this well known would be this nervous about asking a girl out. Nevertheless, I was incredibly taken by surprise. I was taken back to the incident that occurred. When he kissed me... the fight. We had agreed to keep things friendly, nothing more. So why would he be asking me this? Why would he go back on all of the trust we had built? "What?" I asked.
