Twenty-one year old Delilah Thornton, drove through her uncle, Nigel Thornton's, long driveway. She parked her car in front of her uncle's mansion and stared out. She was tired, she had been at the club playing tennis all day.
This has been her home for nine years. Her parents died in a car accident when she was twelve and her uncle took her in. And because he never had any kids of his own, he gave her everything she wanted.
Lately, they hadn't been getting along. Nigel had just gotten married to Elizabeth, who was actually Delilah's age. They had both known each other since they were kids and had never gotten along. And now they had to live under the same roof.
Delilah took a deep breath and got out of the car, walking a few steps towards the door, when it flew open and Nigel stared at her.
"When you said you were hiring a doorman to replace Raul, I never thought you would apply for the job." She said walking into the house.
"The new doorman starts tonight. I was actually waiting for you." At forty-nine, he looked young. His light blue eyes melted any woman that looked at them. He ran his fingers through his light brown hair absent of grays. He could have any woman he wanted, except one that never acknowledged him, but now he was a married man.
"Well, Papa, you'll have to keep waiting. I am exhausted and filthy. All I want to do is go take a shower." She said walking towards the stairs.
"Don't worry, this will be quick. Have you received any response from medical school?"
She stopped and looked back at him, pouting. "Not yet, I'm beginning to think I wasn't accepted."
"Del, you had the grades and the best recommendations." He said, crossing his arms.
"I don't know, maybe these people need to be bought." She said throwing her arms in the air and continued climbing the stairs.
"That could be it, or maybe you're lying." He said as she stopped and turned around. "You never applied to medical school did you, Del? You applied to business school!"
"How do you know that? No, wait, let me guess, your dearest wife Elizabeth told you?"
"At least Lisa got into medical school."
"Papa, it isn't for me, okay? I didn't want to tell you because I know how much you wanted me to follow your steps. I didn't want to disappoint you."
"You could never disappoint me, Del. But you know that was the only way you could make enough money to keep up with your expensive tastes. You didn't think about that, did you?"
"I can make money in business. And I have you for that anyway."
"I'm not going to last forever and you know that." She climbed down the few steps she had climbed and stood in front of him.
"Papa, you're not going anywhere. Don't think about that. When that happens, which is not happening anytime soon, you will not leave me on the street. I will get the house." She said hugging and kissing his cheek.
"I will leave you some money, Del. But the house and the rest are Lisa's."
"Now that's unfair!"
"She's my wife!"
"And I am your blood!"
"What's going on here?" A blond young woman asked, descending the stairs. She looked at Delilah from head to toe with her green eyes before taking Nigel's arm. "Honey, I didn't know you were here so early."
"I just came to have a little chat with Delilah." Niger said, kissing the woman's forehead.
"Oh, please, get a room!" Delilah said, pushing them aside and climbing the stairs up to her room.
"I can't handle her anymore, I've spoiled her too much." Nigel said to his wife after Delilah left. "She doesn't understand I'm looking out for her, for her future."
"Honey, she's grown up. She needs to live her life, look at me, at twenty-one I got married. And I got into medical school. You need to let her go and find herself."
"She can't get married!"
"Why?" She asked curiously.
"There's someone that wants to marry her."
"You're selling her!" She said interested. "What's in it for you?"
"Having her marry into a nice wealthy family. I don't want anything from them. I just want her to be settled. And married to him she won't need me."
"But here you have men offering you money and properties for just dating her!"
"She's not interested in any of them, and I don't trust them. Look, don't tell her about this. Just discourage her from wandering her eyes elsewhere. Okay?"
"What's so special about this man, then?"
"Can't tell you right now. Can you do that for me, my love?"
"Anything, Ni."
"Oh, tonight we are going to John's for dinner. His son, Steve, just came back from college and I heard he's setting his eyes on Delilah. He's the worst you can think of, a womanizer. Warn her about him, please? I'll see you tonight." He said, giving her a quick kiss on her lips.
"Where are you going?" She asked, confused.
"Back to the office."
"Again? But you just got here!"
"I just came to talk to Del. I have to get back, see you later."
"You never come home early for me!" She pouted.
"Lisa, please don't start with this. You know I am really busy, we just came back from a long vacation, just the two of us. Wasn't that enough?"
"It was but I just feel I'm not getting to spend enough time with you lately because you're so busy and here you came and took a few minutes away from your schedule to come talk to Delilah."
"I promise I will take a whole afternoon off and dedicate it to you. I promise. Now, I have to get going." He said leaving her in the middle of the living room.
"Always your precious Del. No harm can come to her." Elizabeth said out loud. "This marriage won't be happening, if it's the last thing I do. I'll see to it."
