The next morning, Delilah woke up in her bed. Was it all a dream? Did she make love to a man she had just met? No, she was in her bed. It had been just a really good dream. She ran her fingers through her hair and came to a conclusion. It wasn't a dream. It had really happened, otherwise she wouldn't have sand in her hair. She got off the bed and ran to her desk where she saw a dozen fresh cut red roses and a piece of paper. She sank into the chair and read the note.
"My precious lady, forever mine you'll be. I carry your heart in my pocket, next to mine. We are one now, since our bodies united. Yours I'll forever be. Always, K.K."
"K.K. God. I love two men." She said looking out the window.
Her door flew open and Elizabeth stormed in. Delilah placed the note in the drawer and looked at Elizabeth. "We need to talk." Elizabeth grabbed her by her arm and dragged her to the bed.
"Elizabeth, I'm doing all I can."
"Really? Steve told me he came looking for you last night and you feigned a headache and had retired to bed early. And I heard you come to your room this morning at one. Who were you with?"
"I'm hungry. Can we take this downstairs?" Delilah said, putting on a robe and pulling her hair into a bun.
When they got into the breakfast room, Elizabeth couldn't take her eyes off Delilah. "Where the hell were you last night? You have sand all over your hair."
"I really had a headache last night, so I went for a stroll down at the beach, I must've fallen asleep."
"Miss Thornton." Kahil said entering the room.
"Kahil, where were you last night? The doorbell kept sounding all through the house. I thought I told you to always be in your post." Elizabeth said as Delilah stared at him in confusion feeling his presence fill the room.
"Miss Thornton. Mister Dayton wants to see you. He says he won't take no for an answer." Kahil said, looking at the floor.
"Kahil, answer me now!" Elizabeth yelled.
"You don't need to answer her, follow me, please." Delilah said, touching his strong arm.
When Delilah arrived at the living room, Steve was waiting for her, furious. "Thank you for receiving me today." He said looking at her with disgust. "At least you could've freshened up a bit before receiving me." He said, raising his voice.
"I just woke up, Steve. And I do have a headache, so stop yelling." She said trying to leave, but Steve grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
"Headache, right? You have to get something into that thick head of yours, nobody lies to me." He said as he pulled her into his body and snarled in her ear.
"You're hurting me, Steve. What the hell is wrong with you? I really have a headache, I'm not lying to you." She said, trying to pull away from him.
"I'm not talking about now. Last night you dismissed me because you faked a headache. And then, a few minutes later, I saw you opening your legs so freely to our friend Kay."
"Let me go, now!" She spat into his face. Then she felt a slap across her face.
"You bitch. How dare you give me hopes and then throw yourself to someone you just met?"
"I never gave you any hope. And you have no right to treat me like this."
"Don't make me hit you again." He said, raising his hand. A dark hand came over it and pushed it away.
"Unhand her, now!" Kahil said, holding Steve's arm behind his back.
Steve let go from Delilah and she ran out of the living room. Kahil let go of Steve's arm and he turned to hit him. "You!" Steve said, looking at Kahil. "You're... you're... Oh my God, you're the doorman!" Steve said, laughing.
"You have a problem with that?"
"What's going on here?" Elizabeth asked entering the living room. "I just saw Delilah running to her room."
"Your doorman interrupted my plans." Steve said with a smile on his face.
"Kahil, how dare you get between a conversation. Your job is to answer the door. If I didn't have plans for you, I would have fired you a long time ago. Go to the front, now!" Elizabeth said furious.
"Wait, Kahil? Is that what you call yourself here?" Steve said.
"What do you mean, Steve? Do you know Kahil?"
"Forget it. Tell Delilah I'm not finished with her." Steve said leaving.
"I'm sure you have a lot to explain. What did Steve mean?"
"I'm sorry, madam. You told me to go to my place. That's where I should be, excuse me."
Delilah locked herself in the bathroom. She took a shower and then tended to her cut lip. She had never been so scared. But now she was scared, scared of Steve. She considered him a friend. Thank God he appeared. But who was him? She wasn't sure. It was his voice and his presence. But who's? Kahil's or Kay's. Both of them made her feel the same way and they looked alike, even though she had never seen Kahil's face.
"What happened to Steve downstairs?" Elizabeth asked entering the bathroom.
"Can't I have some privacy even in my own bathroom?"
"Steve's feelings were hurt."
"Oh, sure. Look at my face. What am I going to tell Papa when he asks?"
"Look, Steve didn't tell me what happened. But he was really angry."
"I'm not his or will ever be his for him to be ordering me around."
"Who's Kay?"
"Um, some guy I met at the club, why?"
"Your uncle might ask you about him. You and him are the talk around the club, so be prepared. Oh, and Steve said he wasn't finished with you. Cover up that cut the best you can. Bye."
