20 November 2022:

Lengthy brush strokes of deep dark maroon glistened on the tactile multimedia sheet of canvas paper. Each mink bristle of the paintbrush was soaked in distilled tap water and slowly dabbed against the already unwhitened crumple of tissue paper, drenched in the harmonious mix of brownish pigment. Jack delicately swirled his brush, the bristles massaging the surface of his Dollar Store watercolour palette, painting fine lines with his magic stick. Days like this were bliss for Jack, the autumn sky was clear enough for the warm rays of the dearly missed sun to shine, bringing back a glimpse of endless summer days and the many more yet to come. He removed his tacky headphones, adjusting the coffee-stained sangria argyle vest he wore, the luscious smell of chestnut coffee still lingered in the cold air.

Jack adored the freedom of being able to paint wild in the open, imagining himself to be some Van Gogh equivalent Impressionist, or possibly even capturing elements of Neo-Romanticism in the Autumn colours just like Monet. But Jack was obviously reaching ahead of himself.

This was what he painted.

Painting was no mere hobby to Jack

Painting was no mere hobby to Jack. It didn't feel quite the same as anything else he had tried to accomplish. In fact, he felt like he didn't need to accomplish anything out of it. He didn't care if he lost that elementary art competition to a drunk hobo at Sandgates when he was 11, he didn't care that his Impressionist-inspired work wasn't exhibited in the 'grand' cascade of avant-garde contemporary works where even an untouched piece of canvas was exhibited. (He cried about that to Mitski) Well maybe he did care a little about that but the point is, painting or art in general, made him free from the expectations of others and his mother. He genuinely loved it.
