The cold wind snapped at your exposed face, causing your nose to be red from the chill. With your arms crossed, you stared out over the snowy gorge with dismay.
"Remember the time I made you ride the Cyclone at Coney Island?" James asked as he stared beside you.
"Yeah, and I threw up?" Steve stated
"Is this payback?" James looked at his lifelong friend.
A smirk twitched at your lips at the simple image in your head. The last few weeks have been a whirl wind, but you still can't picture Steve the way James described him before leaving.
You had tried your best to distance yourself from James, but he didn't seem to notice. Now that Steve was around, he seemed to follow him without much thought. It made sense though, and you weren't much better off when you agreed to follow behind the two of them after some German scientist. After seeing the horrors at the prison, you wanted this to end as much as he did.
"We've got a five second window, or we're like bugs on a windshield."
Steve's voice pulled you back to the present as you watched the train come around the bend. James stepped off in front of you, and for a brief moment, you considered not following. However, your hands instinctively connected you to the cord above you.
"Have fun!" Dum Dum exclaimed almost too excitedly as he gave you a decent push off.
"Screw you!" You returned, but your voice was lost to the wind as you hurdled towards the train. You were pretty sure 'zip lining across a frozen gorge' wasn't mentioned when you signed up for the military.
Your boots hit the train car, and you immediately dropped to your hands and knees and released the breath you didn't know you were holding. James was looking back from the car in front, and you gave a quick thumbs up before clambering to your feet. The deafening wind died away as you dropped into the train car behind the other two. With a simple nod, the three of you started forward.
You followed James through the door threshold only to startle when it closed forcefully behind you. You turned, looking through the window at a confused Steve, before hearing a bullet ricochet beside you. James dove one way while you dove the other.
"How did they know we were coming?" You spat out with irritation.
"I don't know!" James snapped back while attempting to return fire.
What felt like an eternity of exchanging fire was really only a few minutes before the door opened. There was a silent exchange before Steve shoved a box through the shelves in the middle, causing the Hydra agent to pop up on your side of the car. For a brief moment, it reminded you of whack-a-mole, at least before the gunfire made him drop.
The three of you exchanged looks before moving to the front of the car. Steve looked over his shoulder at you and then past you. His eyes widened and he turned, his right hand knocking you out of the way as James ducked down on command. A blast similar to what you experienced back at the prison deflected against Steve's shield and blew out the side of the train car.
The cap on your head whipped out the now exposed side, and you watched, in what seemed like slow motion, James fall out with it. You lunged forward, but your hand grasped thin air as he went over the side and clung to the peeled metal.
"Just hang on!" You cried out as you scrambled to your feet. Ignoring the commotion behind you, you stepped out carefully onto a metal bar and extended your hand. Your heart was stuck in your chest for more than one reason as you slid farther. As his hand grasped yours, the metal peeled back more, and James lost what grip he had on the wall. Your body shifted from the weight change, subsequently impaling your side with a piece of rebar.
