"Akande is to be captured, dead or alive! Our main target is (Y/N) and anyone else they may have taken hostage during the attack. Am I understood?"
A collective sound of grunts of agreeance raked through the crowd. It had been weeks, and no one knew whether or not she was dead or alive. Or any of our men for that matter. We were walking into no-man's land with nothing but a layout of the building, an estimated headcount of Talon soldiers, and a small sliver of what could only be hope.
The air was thick, a tight grasp around our lungs constricted the air, making it hard to breathe. When we go in for hostage missions, the outcome is either very good or very bad. There is never an in between. Depending on the circumstances, those we are trying to rescue are typically either dead or in very rough shape.
I felt my head shaking slightly, trying to rid away any thoughts other than she was alive. She was well, she was breathing, and at the end of all of this she was going to come home.
"Get ready to drop!" Reyes' voice echoed through the belly of the jet, and we all stood in formation. Once I got to the front of the line, I hooked the line to my belt and slid down. The hisses of other soldiers sliding down rang out in the night, and I eyed the ground approaching below me. I landed silently and with ease, unhooking myself and waiting for the rest of the team.
It was Reyes, Cassidy, myself, and three other men. We decided it would be best to remain small, to keep this quiet and swift. That also meant we had our work cut out for us with the dozens of Talon soldiers within Volskaya Industries' walls. Cole landed next to me, straightening out his hat and nodding at me.
"Ready?" He asked, eyes carrying what looked like to be concern. I simply nodded back, and waited for the other two men to land, before stealthily looking down into the skylight to see what guards we could at first glance.
"I count eighteen," I whisper, looking to Reyes who nodded.
"Genji, go in through the side window and take out any man from the north bay. Cassidy, you'll take south, I'll go in from the west. You three take out anyone from the east." Reyes locked eyes with every one of us, "They didn't show us mercy. Repay the favor."
I felt my eyes narrow, and I turned to infiltrate the north side window. There were four men, unsuspecting and walking in formation with their guns close to their chests. Unsheathing my katana, I snuck up from behind, swiftly snapping the neck of one of the men that had been straying behind a few steps. I slowly lowered him to the ground, eyes not leaving the oblivious men in front of me.
The one he had supposed to be walking beside turned slightly, and I took him on next. I wrapped an arm around his throat, muffing his cries with my hands before piercing his back with the blade, slowly pulling it out and laying him down as he gurgled on his own blood.
The final two were walking side by side, shoulders nearly touching, and I sliced the blade swiftly against the back of their necks, relieving their shoulders of their heads, which rolled to the ground as they fell to their knees in unison. I wiped the blood of the blade on one's uniform, switching on the mic on my headpiece.
"Targets neutralized on north side." The other side of the mic hissed with silence, and I took that as an opportunity to scope out the halls. I cleared every room I came across, until one caught my eye. A security room. A man sat behind the desk, facing away from me, and was not studying the screens. Instead, he was looking down at whatever book of puzzles he had been occupying himself with. With a single swift motion, I sliced his throat and shoved him out of the chair, sitting myself down.
"West side- targets have been neutralized."
Reyes' voice seemed to dull, having the effect of being underwater as my eyes locked on a singular screen in the corner. My ears began to ring and all air had been sucked out of my lungs. It was her.
