The man stuck out his hand with a slight smile, "Jack Morrison. Overwatch."
My jaw dropped slightly and nearly lost myself in the depths of my mind- which were completely empty. Body frozen and my back straightening with poise, I couldn't wrap my mind around this. Jack Morrison? The Jack Morrison? What could he possibly want with me?
"Miss. Y/N?"
Snapping me back into reality, I stuck my hand out and shook his, a slight smile tugging at my lips. "Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Morrison."
"Excuse the formalities, call me Jack for now."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Morrison. I don't think I quite understand why you're here," I fiddled with the hem of my coat. Forcing a small chuckle, I looked to Dr. Helio for help. I wondered if someone caught me wandering out from the store last night, reporting the incident in the alley as an assault on my end. They might think me a criminal.
"It's Jack," He reminded me with a stern look, running his hand along a piece of steel machinery, "We got a call early this morning about you. A local omnic."
My heart fluttered a little, meaning the omnic was okay. I would be lying if I hadn't had my mind on his wellbeing all day. Turning to look at me, Jack crossed his arms and leaned back against the wall, "Listen, Miss. Y/N. We need you. We called the omnic in to view your handiwork after hearing the story. Needless to say, with the little resources you had available, you did an impeccable job. We have several agents who are made up of machinery, and while any doctor can study human anatomy- it takes a lot of time to train someone on the medical field with mechanics. Dr. Ziegler is overwhelmed and needs a hand, so I have come to recruit you. You will have your own living quarters, food, and access to state of the art machinery to serve as a medic."
My smile was so big my cheeks hurt from the offer, then it began to falter. I couldn't just leave Dr. Helio here by himself. I was the only person he was able to talk to, and vice versa. We were the only family we had. I looked down at my feet, biting at my bottom lip. Jack took note of this and uncrossed his arms, "Something stopping you?"
"It's just... Dr. Helio is my partner, I don't think I can-"
"(Y/N), listen to me," Dr. Helio stepped up and put a hand on my shoulder, "There is only so much more knowledge I can teach you. But this? This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I will not stand by and watch you let it go. You deserve a life, (Y/N). This is not a life, and while it has been great working by your side, I would rather watch you flourish elsewhere."
My eyes began to burn slightly and I shook my head violently, looking over Dr. Helio's shoulder to see Jack with his arms crossed and flickered back to Dr. Helio. "Helio-"
"She'll take the job," Dr. Helio interrupted me, never breaking eye contact with me. Baffled, my jaw dropped slightly once more. Dr. Helio reached out to me and pulled me to him. I threw myself into his arms and held his waist tightly, realizing my whole world was about to change. Everything I ever learned was in this room. How to write, read, where I learned my medical knowledge, someone who stepped up as a father- and I was about to leave it all behind.
"I'll help you pack your things," He whispered into my hair, rubbing my back soothingly. I pulled away to look up at him with puffy (E/C) eyes and wet cheeks. He offered a lopsided saddened smile, brushing (H/C) fly aways down from the top of my head and pulling me in for one last hug before stepping back and gesturing me to take a step towards Jack. I looked up and nodded, watching Jack pull a silver circular token from his pocket, the size of a coaster, and handing it to me. I turned it over in my hand and saw the Overwatch symbol on it. I ran my fingers over the engraving and a small smile tugged at my lips.
"Welcome to Overwatch."
The rest of the night was quiet as Jack said he would retrieve a cab for me in the morning, returning back to the base. Dr. Helio came back with me to my home, now filled with what few boxes I needed to pack my things into. It wasn't a lot, needless to say. A few photos of Dr. Helio and I from my childhood, seeing the toothy grin of a small (H/C) haired child with eyes full of potential. Running my thumb over the photo, I sat on the couch and my heart weighed heavy in my chest.
I had a good childhood apart from the very beginning, something I don't remember well. Distant memories of begging on the streets, scavenging and stealing to survive. No shoes on my feet, no roof over my head- until Helio came along. Scooped me up and made me into what I am. I remember on my birthday he would let me have sugary cereal, or when I learned a new medical term we would celebrate with milkshakes, or when he would always pinkie promise me that he would never let anything bad happen to me.
My eyes didn't break from the photo until I heard his decent down the stairs, holding a box in his hands. His raven hair was in dismay as that same broken smile found it's way across his lips. "This is the last of it. What are you going to do about your bed and couch?"
I shrugged, looking back down at the photo and folding it, sticking it in a box nearby, "Leave it for the next person, I guess."
Sighing, Helio sat the box down and plopped next to me on the couch, "You're going to do good things, (Y/N). I am sure of it."
"I have no idea what I am walking into, Doc. This is a whole new playing level, lives are going to depend on me," I spoke in a hushed tone, staring at my ceiling.
"How is that any different than anything we have ever done?"
I sat up baffled and threw my hands up, "Gunshot wounds on exemplary agents compared to bandaging a bloodied knuckle from a street fight? They aren't comparable! I don't know what he saw in me." I placed my head in my hands and shut my eyes, blowing a strand of hair out of my face.
"He saw someone worth putting the lives of his men into her care. Someone they needed. You know everything you need to know to be the best medic Overwatch has," Placing a hand on my shoulder, he ended with his usual motto, "Do what you can, try even when you know you can't."
I smiled lightly at the comment, looking over at him and leaning back into the couch with him. I leaned my head on his shoulder and he leaned his head on top of mine. "What am I gonna do without my acquaintance?"
"Everything you do now," I snorted, and I felt his head slightly shake.
"You kept things light, interesting. Even after a hard day of work I smile thinking about you, kid."
I felt the tears begin to flow again, even trying my hardest to bottle it up. This was my last night with Helio, and I found it hard to believe. He hushed me as I cried myself to sleep, knowing this would be the last time I fell asleep under this roof, and the last day I would see Helio.
Eh a pretty short chapter today I'm sorry! I helped my dad demo some rooms in his house today and I was thinking of chapter ideas all day like 'oh wait yes. angst.' lol anyways, I have a Genji playlist I listen to while writing, and so that leads me to the question of this chapter- what is your favorite song? Mine is Everybody Wants to Rule the World- the original ofc. Hope ya'll are doing well, and not much longer until Genji is introduced! Promise!
Have a lovely day <3
