I shot up at my desk, hearing a knock at my door that woke me from my nap. A paper stuck to my face from drool, and I peeled it off in disgust. Groaning, I rubbed my eyes groggily and stood up, shrugging off my lab coat and hanging it on the back of my desk chair. Glancing at my clock, I saw it was well after midnight and wondered who would be standing at my door at this hour. Wiping the remanence of drool off my chin, I walked to my door and hovered my hand over the scanner without opening it.
"Who is it?" The lack of reply confused me, until another knock came a while after. Rolling my eyes, I thought it to be Cole, wanting to annoy me more. Narrowing my eyes, pressed my hand firmly on the scanner and watched the door slide open. What I wasn't expecting to see was the muscular man in front of me, tubes sprouting from his chest and metallic mask covering everything but his eyes and hair.
Tufts of raven hair sprouted restlessly from his head, eyes cold and glaring. My eyes traced their way to his arm, metal. His legs were the same way, and I felt my heart beat rapidly. Glancing quickly over my shoulder, I swallowed hard at the papers sprawled out on my desk. I slid past him and his eyes followed, remaining silent. A breath of relief slipped out when my door slid closed, and I blinked the fog out of my eyes as they adjusted to the light of the med bay. Rubbing them one last time, I could see clearly.
Blood splattered across his skin, and my knees began to buckle. I felt the hair on the back of my neck rise, trembling under his cold stare. He silently walked to a medical table and sat down, hanging his deformed prosthetic legs off the edge. His legs looked shaped like metatarsal bone and phalange rather than normal anatomy. Choking back the lump in my throat, I cautiously stepped towards him and avoided locking our eyes.
"H-How can I help you?"
"Diagnostics." A Japanese accent pooled from his lips, and I shuddered slightly. Nodding, I went over to a familiarized machine and rolled it back to Genji. I stood behind him, and his head dropped, rolling his shoulders. With quivering hands I hooked a tube up into an opening of his spinal support. As I busied myself hurrying a diagnostics report, his breathing was shaky, inhaling deeply.
Glancing at him, I caught myself staring. Several tubes poured from the back of his head, metal sheathing his right shoulder and his back. Tan scars littered across his bare skin, varying in shapes and sizes. My lips fell partly agape, until his head turned sharply to look back. I jumped and my head snapped back to the beeping of the machine. The light blue screen flickered, stating his results.
"Diagnostics came back normal. All systems functioning properly," I said, turning to unhook the machine but he had already begun doing so. Pulling the tube from his back he stood up and laid it on the bed. Once he came to his feet, he looked at me menacingly over his shoulder.
"You are new here." Turning fully towards me, he took slow steps toward me. I went to take one backwards, realizing there was a wall inches behind me. Looking back, I gulped as my body pressed itself into the wall, cursing at myself in my head. The distance closed slowly between us with every step he took.
"Let me offer you some advice," By now he was inches away from me, venom dripping from every word he spoke. I tilted my head up to look at him, seeing his eyes closely for the first time. They were sienna, broken crimson throughout his iris due to the cyberization aspects leaking into his veins. Pressing his chest firmly against mine, I felt a newfound fear knowing he could kill me right now if he so pleased.
"If a file is tucked away without your doing," My heart dropped lower than it already sat, balling my hands into fists and squeezing my eyes shut. I was an idiot to think he hadn't seen the papers spread across my desk. Grabbing my jaw tightly, he turned it to look him square in the eyes. Genji's face lowered near my ear and whispered, "It is not meant for your eyes."
Roughly releasing my face, I turned my head away from his and shut my eyes, feeling his chest ease off slowly. Cracking an eye open, I watched him quietly walk out of the med bay without another word. My chest felt as though it was imploding into itself, heart rate rising as I recollected the events that had just unfolded. Looking down, I saw chips of dried blood that had transferred from his skin to mine. Breathing quickly, I leaned my head back against the wall and closed my eyes.
I saw his eyes looking back at me, his raven hair, the metallic spine, the blood splattered across him. Opening my eyes sharply to the harsh light of the med bay, I hurried to put the diagnostics equipment away and find sanctuary in my room.
Still in disbelief, I stripped myself of my uniform and threw on a hoodie, crawling into bed. I held myself into a ball tightly, struggling to find sleep for the rest of the night. Every time I closed my eyes, feeling on the edge of slumber, the feeling of his callous metallic digits gripping my jaw felt all to real. As though it was happening over and over again. Before I knew it, hot tears rolled down my face and I realized the gravity of the hell I had willingly walked into.
