Taking one last long look at the machine, I screamed in frustration and kicked it. After the fact, I held my toe and winced at the pain of kicking metal. Anger makes people do stupid things sometimes.
I had been working on this old dusty machine in the corner, coated in a thin layer of dust and wondering what it's purpose was. It hadn't been long since its last use, and I wondered if it had been Moira who had utilized it last. It resembled the diagnostics machine, the same one I used on Genji after missions. It had red tubes spewing out of the sides, wrapped neatly into a bundle and placed at the side with precision.
Scrunching my nose, I sat on the floor and leaned my forehead against it. Sighing, I heard footsteps approaching me and I didn't even feel like moving. A knock wrapped against the door frame of the med bay, and I turned.
An unfamiliar man stood with a menacing aura, something I grew used to on the Blackwatch base. He had tan skin and brown hair that fell astray across his face. He looked distressed, but held his composure nevertheless.
"You're needed with Commander Reyes," He took a step to the side, giving me room to walk through. I stood to my feet and grabbed my lab coat that hung on the corner of a cot. Taking a few strides towards him, I held my hand out to shake his hand.
"I don't believe we met, I'm-"
"(Y/N) (L/N). Pinned in less than two seconds by Genji on the mats. Your name has been around a few times." I read his face looking for any sign of him trying to make a joke. Instead, he remained completely stoic, "My name is Sanjay."
I nodded and lowered my hand in embarrassment. I shifted my weight between my feet and snuck around him into the hallway. Turning behind me, I noticed he was gone. Narrowing my eyes in confusion, I shrugged it off and headed to Reyes' office.
Once through the twisting and endless hallways, I knocked on his office door, which slid open to reveal a room full of faces. Genji, Cassidy, Jack, Moira, and a few soldiers I have never met crowded into the room. Swallowing hard, I took a step in to allow the door behind me to shut. Sealed off from any sort of refuge, I huddled myself into a corner in attempt to shake the gaze of everyone that had locked on me. Genji's red hue illuminated the dark room around him, and he was not hard to miss.
"(L/N), pleasure to have you here. Let's continue." Reyes voice boomed in the small room to reach everyone, making me shrink further into myself.
"Several attacks from the terrorist organization Talon have induced panic amongst both branches of Overwatch and Blackwatch. We have an upcoming mission in response. We will be traveling to Rome to meet with Gérard Lacroix to discuss possible protection. Cassidy- you'll be at my side for that conference. Rome is a hot spot for Talon, so we must remain vigilant and alert. As for you, Moira, you will be in charge of the med bay while (L/N) comes in case things go south."
I gnawed at my bottom lip in both excitement and nervousness. While I have never been to Rome and it will be cool to see, the experiences that may come along with it may not be so grand. Everyone's lives would be in my hand in the case that we were under attack or worse.
"We will descend within the next month. I will give late notice when the day comes as to not allow any findings of our travels to Talon. Are there any questions?"
No one spoke up or broke their eye contact with Reyes, causing him to nod subtly, "Very well, you are all dismissed. (L/N), stay back a minute, will you?"
As the room cleared, I caught eye contact with Genji. His head hung low, gazing at me through the corner of his eyes. I snapped my head back to Reyes and nodded to take a seat at the desk in front of him once everyone had left. The second the door slid shut when the last person stepped out, he released a breath I couldn't even tell he was holding. He leaned on his forearms against his desk, locking his eyes on the paperwork scattered array.
"(Y/N), things are nearly guaranteed to get messy within hours of being there. Once wind of us catches up to Talon we will be the main targets until they have attempted to take every one of us out. You will have many wounds to tend and many thoughts on your mind. My question is," He sat up and locked his hands together to look at me sternly, "Will you be able to handle it? Angela is busied with Overwatch work, not like she would want to participate in this field, anyways. Moira is on leave and I am only bringing her back to take care of things here while we are gone. You will have a lot to manage and with that medic badge on your arm you will be a prime target. Take out the medic, easier to take out the soldiers. On the other side of that, if you are captured, there is never a guarantee we will get you back. Can you hold your own?"
With so many words and loose ends to digest, I felt like I was going to be sick. There was a possibility I wouldn't make it back to base. I would have men relying on me to come back as well. I pursed my lips and gripped my knees with my nails until I nearly bled. It shouldn't feel like so much pressure, should it? Lives have relied on me since I was old enough to speak. I looked up to him and nodded, narrowing my eyes slightly.
"You can count on me."
"Very well, then. Return to your quarters and begin preparing." I nodded once more, rising to my feet and beginning to take my leave. "Oh, and (L/N)?"
I turned slightly to look over my shoulder. He glared slightly, causing me to grow weary. What had I done this time?
"Do not tamper with that machinery anymore. That's an order."
You see, here's the thing. If you tell a kid to not touch something, it only brings their attention to it even more. My interest was further peaked, but I decided it was best to ask my millions of questions about it. What is was, what it did, why was it there if I couldn't touch it...
"It was one of Moira's projects." He simply stated, as if he could read my mind. I formed an 'O' with my mouth and finished making my way out of Reyes' office.
As I made my way to the med bay to begin packing for the long journey ahead of us, nerves began to bubble in my stomach. I was never an anxious person until I joined Blackwatch, but now that I have, I am constantly reminded of negativity surrounding the world. Knives at my throat, threats, terrorist groups- my life is now on a thin line along with everyone else here.
Now with the reminder that I was at risk of not coming back, I was reminded of just how expendable my life really was.
Uhhh pisses pants? 100 reads? Thank you so much??? I would have done a few chapters this week but my god the wifi in this hotel is such balls. I had to turn on my hotspot to type this chapter up.
