One mission became many, and before anyone noticed, four years had gone by.
Three years ago..
Your fingers traveled on the map that covered the whole table. A map that displayed the white paradise as beautifully as it is deadlishly. In three years, it will be time to move. Maybe this world is fictional but it stayed a reality, one you couldn't go back in time to correct your failures. Your eyes squinted before you put pins on the map, place of interessed. You raise your head at the two officers that had waited for your orders.
"You'll have a small team of your choice. Make sure to keep quiet and not be seen. Then you'll use that and move after the event took place. Once they are all gone." You handed Kanda a remote before folding the map. "Don't harm anyone."
"Vice Amiral.. Are you sure the superiors allowed this mission ?" Kanda didn't ask out of curiosity, he was trying to understand if it was for the marine or for personal goals. Something that was quite stupid knowing that you never acted for the marine. Wherever you were, it was about survival, about feeling a twig of light. That's why in this instant, you could only let out a twisted smile, one that just appeared against your better judgement. Eyes reflecting a deep void, your lips part softly to show your sharp teeth.
"No."
Four days earlier...
White stone streets stretched beneath your feet, polished until they almost glowed, reflecting the sunlight so harshly it hurt your eyes. The buildings rose elegant and pristine, carved from the same pale mineral, their beauty praised by the world and envied by outsiders. From a distance, Flevance looked like a jewel resting on the earth, untouched, pure, perfect.
You remembered Flevance as a city that gleamed too brightly, but standing there, you felt it.
People passed by with forced smiles and careful steps, their laughter brittle, their movements restrained. They coughed behind gloved hands and averted their gazes too quickly. The white stone beneath your fingers felt cold, almost sickly, as if it leeched warmth straight from your skin.
The ground itself was poisoned.
The mines loomed in the distance, yawning open like wounds carved into the land. That was where the city's wealth came from. That was where its death was born. The white lead had once glittered, promising prosperity, promising safety. Now it devoured everything it touched.
You saw the way bodies were quietly carried away at night. The way homes were sealed shut, never to open again. The way the city pretended not to notice as it rotted from the inside out.
