CHAPTER 21: WHORE
Vincent Florence
When the curtains opened, introducing Sarah Barrington to us, I knew my suspicions were correct that she was the star of tonight. During my odyssey around the dance hall, all signs pointed to Ms. Barrington being the star. Her family’s influence, her high ego, and the fact that she always believes she’s above everyone.
Sarah Barrington sat upon a throne that was a reddish color. But upon closer look, it wasn’t a throne she sat upon, but rather what looked like a giant beast.
On her left side was the head– or heads– of the beast. The beast had seven heads: one had four horns and the other six a single horn for a total of 10 horns. On each horn was a single golden crown.
Sarah herself wore a dark red an purple robe. Her body was covered in jewels and pearls that hung from her neck. In her hand was a large golden chalice that was also covered in jewels.
The screens on the TV zoomed into Sarah herself, showing her smug look as she smiled at the crowd. She took a sip from her chalice, a red liquid spilling on the side of her lips. But the most captivating part was what was written on her forehead.
‘MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH’
A microphone could be heard turning on. On the ground, where the layer of ice was at, was a small pedestal where a guy stood.
“That’s Gideon Barrington!” Percy said. “Sarah’s father!”
Gideon tapped the microphone and the crowd shushed.
“Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. As you can see, my beautiful daughter is on this stage to claim her future throne. We have had a successful election, funding hundreds of nominees and gaining control of Congress! Our work isn’t finished. Once we ratify the Constitution and lower the presidential age, my sweet daughter will reign over this country and get it back to what it once was.” Gideon said in his speech.
I leaned over to Connor. “What does he mean to get this country back to what it was?” I asked.
“I have no idea nor do I want to find out.” Connor replied.
“Tonight is not just a celebration for my daughter, but all of us. Tonight, we can explore our deepest urges away from the eyes of those who would never understand.”
A woman walked by holding trays of something. People grabbed one and held them in their hands. She came to us with the tray in her hands. On it were smaller chalices, but less extravagant than the one Sarah held.
“We shall toast to us, a future that America can overjoy in!” Gideon said, raising a golden chalice. I grabbed a chalice and smelled the liquid.
“What is it?” Connor asked me.
