Clay was such a pleasant surprise. Wren laughed more with her, and more genuinely too, than she had in a long time. She stayed over for the rest of the afternoon and Wren was still sad to see her go.
"I'm sorry I didn't visit you before now." Wren said as she was taking her leave.
"You don't have to be, I knew you were keeping more to yourself now and it didn't hurt my feelings. I thought I'd better come see you anyway though, so you wouldn't think I wanted to avoid you."
"I'm so glad you did, honestly. I hope we can talk again soon."
Clay smiled at that, real sweetness peeking out from under her confident air.
"It would be okay if you didn't, you know. You don't need to be all extra polite with me."
"No, I do mean it," Wren insisted. "Today was so much fun. If you have time I'd love to see you."
Clay laughed a little and stepped forward to hug her.
"I'm so glad you're back, Wren."
