As I grew older, I've learned it was the little things that made the biggest impacts in our lives; those small gestures become our favorite memories. And memories and our past follow us no matter how far we - try to run.
Over the past few weeks my life has done a complete 180. I discovered my boyfriend was a cheater and I got fired from work.
I truly believe Ms. Ellen was waiting for me to mess up so she had a reason to fire me because she disliked how outspoken I was against any mistreatment we endured under her leadership.
When I left the restaurant yesterday, I promised myself not to feel sorry for myself and so far I've done a great job - have kept it. I channeled my energy on applying for jobs right away. My dream of becoming a chef and to run my own kitchen required me to attend culinary school and that required a lot of money. Money I didn't readily have.
The silver lining to my current predicament was the extra time on my hands to do whatever I wanted. While working I hardly spent time with April due to our hectic schedules or my then boyfriend, whom I spend my off days with. This free time meant I could chill with her today -the first of many to come; provided she doesn't fly off to a faraway job any time soon.
"What do you mean you're here already ?" I shouted into the phone, running down the stairs to meet April outside. I snatched my house keys and side bag from the entry table next to the door.
"My poor ears," she said before ending the call.I took my house keys and a side bag. She was taking me out for breakfast. We hadn't seen each other since the homecoming party. "Hey, I missed you," I gave her a side hug after getting in the car.
"Serves you right, after you bailed and avoided me like plague," she retorted.
"I wanted to deal with it on my own. He's your brother and you shouldn't be caught between us," I told her, putting on a seatbelt.
"I understand, but I'm here if you want to have a venting session. Girls before boys and all that shit," she smiled as she said the last part.
During the drive we sang along to Taylor Swift's songs until we reached our destination. The feelings of guilt and regret hit me as we talked and laughed once we stepped out of the car. I held onto her arm, and we stopped walking. She looked back at me curiously but also with concern.
At that moment, I hated myself for ignoring her, because I couldn't see past my hurt. It wasn't her fault that her brother was a douchebag.
"I'm sorry for putting you in the naughty corner with him, you didn't deserve it,"
"I'm not gonna lie, I was mad at you, then I remembered how you deal with such things," April said, hooking our arms together.
"I will reach out next time, I promise,"
"Good, because I will hunt you down if you do that again." She snickered.
We were having breakfast at Williams' cafe. They served the most delicious croissants I have ever tasted. We joined the queue to place our order, then sat down at the table overlooking the streets. After a few minutes a server came out with our beverages to warm us up while we waited for our breakfast.
"You said you have a surprise for me?" I asked, sipping my coffee while A drank tea.
I was never a big fan of tea, especially the ones April indulges in; green tea. She doesn't drink coffee as much as I do, but when she does it's bitter and black.
"First we eat, then the surprise." She smirked, wiggling her eyebrows at me, knowing my love for food surpasses everything.
Right on cue, our server brought our food and my mouth instantly salivated. Normally, A had a very strict diet but today was her cheat day; while I ordered their special breakfast that consisted of pancakes with bacon and eggs, she ordered a full English breakfast.
