I have been a nervous wreck since Soph mentioned meeting the ‘in-laws’, and now I was worse because Daniella just arrived with his parents. I couldn’t help but worry that they might not like the food, yes Jake prepared the menu, but I cooked.Walking to the garden where all the guests were waiting to surprise the couple, I found Jake. His eyes roamed over my outfit, desire and admiration written all over his face.
Soph had packed a long blue-ish floral pattern wrap around dress, with white sandals and a blue denim jacket for me. I hadn't worn this dress in ages, but it was perfect for today's dinner in the garden. It complimented the warm and chilly spring weather. My jet black hair was in a messy bun on top of my head and I had applied a touch of mascara and lip gloss. To complete my look I wore a simple neck piece and hand crafted bangles.
I didn't know a gaze could make me feel so good and wanted. Even now, in a garden filled with thirty five guests, his eyes were solely fixed on me and me alone. Even with five feet between us, his eyes were penetrating through my very soul. It felt like he knew me and could see everything I hid from the world.
"Why do we have to go to the garden, Daniella? I thought you said it was urgent that you talk with us? Couldn’t it wait until our holiday was over?" A woman's voice filled the quiet backyard, floated from the house, breaking the eye contant Jake had on me.
I stood next to Soph and the other two guys who were working in the kitchen. After several minutes of Jake's older sister Daniella convincing her parents why it was important they talk in the garden, they walked through the door leading to the garden.
Her mother gasped and pushed Daniella playfully. One look at their dad, and I could see he knew about the surprise. My suspicion was confirmed when he winked at Daniella.likeThe Adams children hugged their parents and then stepped away to allow them to make their way around their guests.
“Happy 35th wedding anniversary my dearest parents, you inspire us and by that I mean Jemma and I to find love like yours, a love filled with respect, trust, compassion and faithfulness. It’s a privilege to have grown up watching you loving each other as you do, fighting for your love no matter what or who stood in front of you. Here’s to more years of your love. Can we all raise our glasses,” Jake said and we did. “Here’s to love worth fighting for.”
“To love worth fighting for.”
When that was done we were led farther into the garden where a long table was beautifully decorated with simple flowers. Light fixtures hung around the surrounding trees along with candles. The tables were filled with chatter and laughter.
We had prepared so many dishes, mostly the couples favorite foods and also made sure to include some vegan dishes. The food was full of different European cuisines and so far everyone hasn't complained. As promised Jake had cooked the spaghetti bolognese for the kids.
"This fish pie reminds me of my mum's cooking." Someone from my far left stated.
Jake's menu wasn't too fancy, it consisted of dishes one would prepare for their families at home. As he talked me through it last night over the phone, he talked of how some of the dishes were dishes his parents enjoyed back in Australia before they moved.
There was so much love and history in most of the dishes. White chocolate cheesecake was his mother's favorite and fish pie was a meal that reminded the entire family of Australia. I added a twist to the fish pie as we didn't have all the ingredients, but no one seemed to mind.
"Why don't you prepare such hearty meals for us?" Soph accused taking a bite of her smoked lamb shoulder in filo pastry.
"Are you accusing me of cooking you bland food Sophia?! I asked, dramatically.
