Sadness

The next class, Geography, was taught by a teacher by the name of Oscar Laboner, and he was most interested in the last thing Jungkook wanted anyone's attention to go towards.

His blue eyes.

- Well, Smith is a surname that dates back to medieval England so maybe you got them from your father's side. - He wondered as he rubbed his index finger against his chin, standing in front of the board with his legs spread wider than the width of his shoulders and not minding how the class had been completely halted by his arrival.

Jungkook, however, did mind. And he minded even more that the teacher was speculating with false basis behind his theories.

But how could he tell them that he didn't carry his parents' ancestors' genes when not even he liked to talk about it?

So he stayed silent as he was being tortured by a man who loved his job a bit too much.

- What's your mother's last name? - He asked, still squinting at him as though he was a mystery he wanted to unravel.

Jungkook sighed, sinking a bit lower in his chair and making John laugh in the seat beside him.

- Chalouf. -

Once he answered, the teacher perked up, John stopped laughing, the general murmuring ceased to be, and he watched as the teacher smiled.

- I have never heard that surname in my life. - He sounded delighted. All around there came mutterings of his classmates trying to pronounce his mother's surname. - Sounds French, I'll look it up later. Where's your mother's family from? I'm leaning more toward the probability that you got them for her instead. -

Jungkook leaned forward on the table where he rested his elbow to press his left cheek against his knuckles.

- Weren't we learning how to read maps? - He asked, fully aware that he hadn't taken out anything from his bag since he arrived a few minutes ago with Dorothy, ten minutes after class had started. He only wanted the teacher to stop.

The teacher laughed, either not caring he clearly didn't find this topic fun or not knowing how to read people's faces.

- Yes, we were. - He straightened up and walked back to his desk from where he took a pointer stick. - Tell me, - He jabbed it at the map he'd hung over the board. - Where's your mother's family from? Come here and point it out to me. -

Jungkook took a deep breath and placed both hands on the desk to pull himself up. As he walked over to the board, he tried very hard not to show the discomfort coming from his left leg and took the pointer stick from the teacher's hand. He stood beside the map and looked over at his classmates as he began to lead the class away from him.

- My mother's family comes from Italy. - He outlined it with the pointer as he looked at the map. - Then, because of the Spanish domination of Italy in the sixteenth century... - He outlined Spain in another part of the map. - ...my great-great-something grandparents moved to Switzerland. - He outlined it and made a line from Italy to Switzerland. - Then, in the late eighteenth century, they moved again because they were discontent with the Napoleonic era because Switzerland came under French influence. - He outlined France. - And they moved here to America. More specifically Philadelphia. - He pointed that out too. - And then it was my grandfather's grandfather, the one who moved the family to Washington D.C. So, my mother's family had been here since around eighteen sixty. -
