ISABELLEShoving the last bit of sandwich into my mouth, i slump in my chair and chew quietly. Marcus finished eating a while ago. My dad and the doctors have been talking for hours, and we ended up going home to clean ourselves up, and then we came back to eat in the cafeteria.
"Reckon we should go back?"
Marcus doesn't answer for a while, his focus on his phone. His thumbs tap against the keyboard, while his eyes stare at the screen. "Marc? Marc!"
"Hmm?" His eyes dart to me for a mile second before moving back. His thumbs start to movie again. It's obvious he's texting Thomas. I don't blame him, they haven't spoken all day. Smiling at my distracted friend, i take a sip of my water and wait until he's free.
"Okay," He turns his phone over and rests it on the table. Marcus moves his body so it's facing mine, and i roll my eyes. He's such a dork sometimes. "What'd you say?"
I ignore him, and ask my own question. "How's Thomas?" A smile blooms on his face, a look over ease filling his features.
"He's good. Said he's turning in in an hour, so i can't call him when i'm home. Also, he might be coming home tomorrow, it depends init."
I nod. "Why don't you stay over at my house? Rather you staying alone, right?" Marcus shrugs at my words. "Yeah, okay. Now what'd you say?"
"Huh? Oh! Should we go back now? They should be finished by now right?"
Marcus nods and stands up, grabbing his phone when it's beeps. He turns it over and his whole body language changes.
"Holy shit. Holy shit— Izzy, get up." Marcus rushes to leave the cafeteria, and i quickly follow him, staring at him in bewilderment.
"Marcus— what? Can you slow down!?"
"No!" He mutters, power walking. He turns around, facing towards me, and walks backwards, an excited look on his face. "Kanes awake."
My feet freeze.
Marcus smiles at me, eyes turning glossy. My eyes close and i let out a silent prayer. Thank God. Thank God, he's awake. Marcus wraps his arms around me and i shove my face into his chest, crying. But this time they are happy tears. Relived tears.
"Are you sure?" I choke out. "How— what, who told you?"
"You're dad!" He rubs my back, and i feel something wet drip on my head. He's crying. I cry harder and hold him tighter, rubbing his back. "C'mon, he's awake. Let's go!"
I wipe my tears away, only for new ones to appear, and we rush to Kane's room. Hand in hand, we run in the halls, probably looking like maniacs, and i can't help but laugh.
He's awake. After two weeks, he's finally awake. I just want to fucking dance.
Reaching his room, i try to calm my heart down, and i wipe my eyes. Marcus wipes his, and we both stare at each other, silently calming down. We're excited he's awake, but we can't risk triggering him. We don't know what state he's awake in.
Marcus pushes the door open and we walk in. My shoulders sag with relief when i see him. My dad is leaning over him slightly, helping him adjust his pillows. Kane's face is contoured in pain, and Dr Antimon is stood beside them, talking to a woman dressed in blue scrubs, and another in casual wear, but it's obviously a professional visit because in her arms lies a massive folder.
"Izzy," my dad smiles, "Marc, c'mon. We've been waiting for you." Marcus rushes to Kane and ruffles his hair. Kane smiles. His lips tug up ever so slightly, and his forehead creases, and i know he's in pain. His eyes stop on me and they don't move.
