Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months. And Sand's heart began to heal.
In the beginning, he went to the mailbox every day, hoping that Ray had written to him. But by now he walked past the mailbox without even glancing at it.

"Sand, I made us dinner. Do you want to watch a movie while you do it?" Sand sat on the couch, middle he and Summer were a pretty good team. She had been there for him when no one else was.
Of course Mew had stuck by Ray, understandably he was his best friend after all. And in Mew's eyes, Sand was now the total asshole, which, he had to admit, wasn't all that incomprehensible.

"Here's your food." Summer placed the various bowls and plates on the living room table and joined Sand on the couch. It had become an evening ritual for them, eating together while watching a movie.

"I love that movie." Summer had rested her head on Sand's lap and was pointing at the screen. "Jack just wants to please the residents of Halloweentown, poor guy."

"He just wants to do something good and fucks up completely."

"That's life sometimes." Summer sat up. "But in the end, everything is the way it should be and the mistakes are what had to happen for everything to be perfect." Are we still talking about the movie, Summer?

"Do you really believe that?" Sand stroked through Summer's hair.

"Yes. I think so. So sometimes life just plays out that way, and sometimes people slide into your life to open new doors you never noticed before. Like Jack slipped into Christmasland." And in the end, he realized that he loves his Halloween more than anything after all.

"We're not talking about the movie anymore, are we?" Sand had said the question aloud and immediately regretted asking it.

"No Sand...I'm not talking about the movie anymore." Summer sat up. "Haven't you ever thought about it?"
About what? Stop talking in riddles.

"I don't know what you mean." I know it but I don't know if I'm ready to have that conversation.

"Of course you know, pretty boy." Summer smiled at Sand, she had a wonderful and warm smile.

"Do you think it's a good idea?" Of course it is not. Friends should remain friends.

"Why not? We already live together like a couple anyway." Summer laughed. "You bring a towel to the bathroom when I forget them. We don't leave the house without a kiss on the cheek, we cook together, spend every evening together in front of the TV or listening to music. We get along without having to even think about it." She brushed a strand of her long hair behind her ear. "So what's there to lose?" Our friendship.

"You really mean it huh?" Summer cupped Sand's face between her handsome ones.

"Would be a pretty stupid joke, wouldn't it? You don't play with feelings."

"And you're sure this is a good idea? You don't want to compensate or anything?" Nick raised an eyebrow. Sand and Nick sat in front of their screens. They had agreed to talk on Skype every Saturday. Boston had an arm wrapped around Nick's shoulders from behind.

"I think it's good that Sand is trying to have a fresh start." Boston interjected. He smiled at Nick. "Sometimes you have to try something new to move on in life. Don't you?" He gave Nick a kiss on the cheek.

"Ton, that's really gross you know? Still haven't gotten used to the man with the worst playboy reputation in yolo being taken." Sand chuckled. "As long as you treat Nick like the wonderful human he is, I have nothing against it tho."

"You see? Nothing ventured, nothing gained." Triumphantly, Boston grinned at the camera.

"What about Ray?" Nick's question hit Sand right in the heart. He swallowed hard.

"Ray?" Sand's mind drifted far away.

"Yeah you know, the guy you had a thing with for one year. And who you've been in love with for almost two years now." Hooked Nick.

"We're broken up okay...I haven't heard from him in months and I haven't written to him in months either. I don't even want to think about him." Because it hurts too much.

"I'll ask you again. Are you serious about Summer, or is she just your rebound girl?"

"It's been six months Nick...I don't feel like pausing my life and waiting for something that may never happen." Sand rubbed his temples. "Summer is good to me, she respects my feelings, we share similar interests. I like her. I finally feel alive again." Nick looked closely at Sand. He knew his best friend was definitely fooling himself, but on the other hand, he could understand and was glad that Sand probably had a stable and healthy relationship with Summer. "Change of subject. When are you coming back? You stayed there longer than all of us thought." Sand put on a smile. "I miss you buddy, and frankly i miss you too Boston."

Countless boxes were piled up in Sand's apartment. Summer ran excitedly back and forth and collected some small things to check them off on her list.

"Baby where do you want me to put all your shoes?" Sand stood scratching his head in front of the shoe rack. Summer turned to him and smiled.

"The box for the shoes is in the kitchen, dummy."

"What are the shoes doing in the kitchen, please?" Sand laughed and shook his head. He walked up to Summer and wrapped his arms around her body from behind. "I can't wait until we finally get to be in the new apartment." Sand kissed Summer on the cheek and rested his chin on her shoulder. "A completely new stage in our lives." In an apartment without memories.

"Boston and Nick will be back in three days." Summer turned to Sand. " Do you think they'll like me?" Sand smiled gently and brushed a strand of hair from her face. "I'm very sure they will like you. Yo likes you too, doesn't she?" He gave her a kiss on the forehead.

"I am very sure you will get along well. But now we have to hurry up with packing. Otherwise we won't be ready in three days. And when they come back, the apartment should be ready."

Among the boxes, Sand and Summer had spread out a picnic blanket, lit a few candles, and placed some food in the middle of the blanket. The apartment was filled with their laughter and the music of his heroes was blaring from Sand's portable speaker, as both of them Sand along to the melodies. It was a perfect evening, nearly perfect, if there hadn't been that sting in Sand's heart, a sting which occasionally popped up and reminded him of someone who wasn't in his life anymore.
