„I can't believe you're really doing this" She sighed, watching the many streets rush past her at fast speed.
„I don't get why you're so mad about this" He frowned and looked over at her for a moment, then quickly back at the road. „You said it yourself, she's my sister so I'm coming with you"
„Oh yeah and the fact that we'll show up there together isn't strange at all" She scoffed.
And even though it wasn't a laughing matter at all, Rafe still let out a small chuckle as he took one more second to look at her sitting in his passenger seat with that annoyed expression.
His hand moved from the gearshift to her thigh, stroking her bare skin and squeezing lightly.
„We're just friends" He shrugged, making her look over at him with a frown.
„Friends?"
„Yeah, we're just two friends picking up Sarah, nothing more" He said, nodding to his own words and running his hand along her thigh.
His words were the opposite of his touch.
„Right..." She started nodding too as she understood where he was going with this. „...and I still think it's a dumb idea"
Shaking his head, he drove the car over the bridge that connected Figure Eigth and the Cut. Gradually the area became more and more rural, more overgrowth, less well-kept gardens, and the roads became bumpy, causing the car to shake every time the tires drove over a hole in the road. She had tried to convince Rafe to let her go alone, but no matter what she told him, he wouldn't stop arguing with her. He said it was way too late and dark and that he didn't trust the Pogues and that he just wanted to make sure nothing happened to her and...argument after argument until Alice couldn't take it anymore and gave in.
Or rather, didn't see any point in arguing with a stubborn man like him.
„Please don't do anything stupid, no matter what they say" She begged, recognizing the area as they turned onto the road to the château.
Without agreeing to her request, Rafe drove the car down the bumpy path, stopping and turning off the engine when they reached the end. For a moment, however, Alice just sat there and looked at the little white house in silence, a strange feeling arising within her.
If everything had turned out differently, she might still be here regularly today.
„Hey-„ He spoke and turned her face to him by her chin. „-you okay?"
„Yeah, yeah I'm good it's just...I don't like being here" She admitted, remembering the last time and how it ended.
With an understanding look, he stroked her lower lip with his thumb and leaned towards her over the center console, replacing the touch of his thumb with that of his own lips, completely unbothered by the fact that there were certain people living in the house in front of them who really shouldn't see them kiss.
And yet she kissed him back, tenderly and quietly, a moment of innocence between them and the difficulty of their love.
He placed his hand on her cheek and ran his thumb soothingly over her soft skin as he pulled away from her. His eyes darted between her eyes and her lips, thinking about what the back seat of his car would've offered them now if they weren't standing in front of this shabby house full of Pogues.
However, he put that idea aside and would come back to it another time, clearing his throat as he started to grin. „see, if I wouldn't be here, you wouldn't have anyone to kiss right now"
„Dont worry, I would've asked JJ" She rolled her eyes teasingly and pushed him away to get out of the car.
He got out as well and slammed the door shut, so loudly as if to announce their arrival. „what do you mean you would've asked JJ?"
„God, please shut up" She hissed and led the way into the front yard, which was lit by the many fairy lights hanging in the large tree and he followed her, his steps close behind.
The Pogues had gathered around a crackling campfire, drinks in their hands and soft music playing, but there was no trace of their smiles anymore when they spotted the two of them approaching.
A sight that caused silence to spread within the group.
And between those faces full of bewilderment sat Sarah, completely free of the unrest that Alice had heard trough the phone earlier.
„What..." She blurted out, standing up from her spot between John B and Kiara. „...what the hell are you doing here, Rafe?"
„Don't you think you should ask yourself what you're doing here?" He huffed, pointing at the Pogues, who didn't seem very enthusiastic about him either. „Kook life wasn't enough anymore, so you tryna' be a Pogue now?
„Wait, you told him?" Sarah scoffed stunned, pointing at Alice.
She stood next to him without saying a word, her throat tightening as she felt like their stares were burning on her skin.
Oh, she'll never be able to handle even the smallest of lies.
„I made her tell me...Ian took her car so she couldn't come here herself, she needed someone to drive her and the choice was between Topper and me, so you should be fucking happy she asked me instead of him" Rafe answered for her, a lie so quick and conclusive that she was momentarily surprised. „and it's not like I haven't heard the rumor that my little sister is getting fucked by a dirty Pogue"
It was the harshness of his words that made John B stand up and push past Sarah. „Don't fucking talk to her like that"
Rafe laughed spitefully as John B came towards him, a danger rising in his attitude which Alice noticed and made her take a step between them as he was about to approach John B.
„We're just here for Sarah, not to start any fights, so drop the Pogues vs Kooks bullshit" She raised her hands in surrender, making John B stop in his tracks, feeling Rafe rearing up behind her.
She wasn't really sure if John B actually stopped because of her words.
„We don't want you here"
Alice's gaze swung over to JJ, who dared to say something and was actually the only one who wasn't very surprised that they showed up here together. „And maybe there's a reason why she would rather be with us than with you two" He added and made her look at Sarah who had apparently lost her voice.
All those years-the whole friendship-wouldn't end in her deciding against her, would it?
„Sarah, you coming?" Alice asked hesitantly, possibly even afraid of the answer she would get.
