Rafe turned into her driveway, the lights of the Blakely house turned off, so apparently her mother was already asleep and Ian and her father weren't back yet.
„I'll walk you to the door" He unbuckled his seatbelt as Alice did too.
„Wait, you won't stay for the night?" She asked in surprise.
Shaking his head, he sighed and turned off the car engine. The two of them remained seated for a moment, looking at each other through the dim interior light.
„I think I'll go home" He sighed resolutely. „to check how Wheezie's doing and if-" He paused, running his hand through his wild strands of hair. „-and if dad's still mad at me"
There was a glimmer of pity in her eyes as he looked back at her. She knew that behind the side of him that she loved so much, there was a different side that worried her.
But talking to him about it now would be wrong, wouldn't it?
„Don't look at me like that"
„Like what?"
„Like that" He drew circles in front of her eyes, couldn't handle what they made him feel.
With a sweet laugh, she pushed his hand away and felt a warm flutter in the pit of her stomach as he began to smile at the sound of her laughter.
„Now get out of here, my car smells like vanilla cake because of you" Rafe nudged her shoulder and was already opening his car door. The two hopped out and even though it wasn't actually necessary, he insisted on walking her to the door. They climbed the three little stairs to the front porch, the automatic light turning on and cutting through the darkness of the night as she pulled out her keys, but didn't turn to the door yet.
„You'll be okay, right?" She blurted out hesitantly.
Taken by surprise, he furrowed his brows and crossed his arms over his chest, watching as she fidgeted with her keys.
„Yeah...why are you asking?"
„I don't know, I just..." She looked up from her hands back to him and those pretty big blue eyes.
Alice hated herself for it but she knew that if she could control her heart, she would have tried everything not to fall in love with Rafe. Not because he was Sarah's brother, or because it wouldn't fit - because it absolutely did - but because it scared her.
It scared her that she knew there was something about him that made her love difficult.
„If the conversation with your dad doesn't go well..." She slowly got the courage to speak. The way she spoke, the way she hesitated and hardly dared to look him in the eyes, made him realize what she was getting at.
Nodding, he looked down and took a sharp breath through his nose. „you trying to ask me if I'm gonna do coke if he kicks me out again?"
„I'm not blaming you, Rafe, that's really not what I'm trying to do and I get that it's not easy for you, your dad's being a dick and you're...struggling with things and I understand that, but I'm scared and worried and it makes me nervous because I..." She went on and on, without stopping and with no idea what she was saying, but before she could utter those three small words, he stole them from her with his lips pressed to hers.
She held her hands stiffly in front of her, felt him kiss her and didn't return it at first. Only when his hands gently pulled her a little closer to him by the waist and she placed her hands on his hard chest, pushing herself on tiptoes to get to him, did she kiss him back.
