To take a vow of immortality
Was often for those who had nothing left.
But for the boy who danced among the stars,
It was because his fear of death.
He had watched too many pass away,
He saw their final breath.
He saw the light leave their eyes,
As Death laid them to rest.
He had lost far too much,
In a world that never gave.
He did not want to lose his life,
He did not want to go to the grave.
He asked the moon at midnight,
"Please don't let me die.
Don't let the reaper take me
To the place where ghosts cry.
Don't let my heart stop,
Don't let others grieve over me.
If I should feel the pain instead,
Then so let it be."
And so the moon heard,
And froze his age in time.
Whether he was selfless or selfish,
The moon could not decide.
Death kept away from the boy,
Knowing one day soon,
The pain would overwhelm him,
And inside he'd die too.
And where the boy dwelled,
The stars up in the sky,
They whispered to one another,
Before the sun grew nigh,
"How terrible it must be,
To love something so much,
Even when you know,
It's something that Death can touch."
