October Rain

It is cold out tonight
As you slip into your sweater
And step outside at six thirty three
To greet the rainy weather
There is a milk sky
With no signs of any stars
And with the wind is sad memories
That tug at your worn heart
At this time last year
Candles burned in the kitchen
Your brother was still at home
You can hear his voice if you listen
Soup sat on the stove
And you gladly poured a fourth
Into those brown ceramic bowls
The steaming broth and vegetables
Warming up your soul
Outside the wind howled
Whipping away at the trees
Yellow, orange, and brown
A hurricane of leaves
A light rain drizzled over the roof
And you could hear it falling
Against your bedroom wall
As if the night was calling
Your boots sat by the door
Their laces messily tied
And after venturing in the woods
They were left to sit and dry
The plaid pajamas you wore
Draped over knitted socks
You tiptoed down the halls
Reading eleven eleven on the clocks
A flickering light was seen
Coming from your brother's room
And as you curled up with a book
Away faded the October gloom
And soon sleep came
With thick warm wool blankets
You could very faintly hear
The last chorus of crickets
Away in the distance
In the forest near downtown
A train whistled softly
A magical joyous sound
But now when you arrive home
There is no warm dinner
Waiting for your cold hands
There is no smell of ginger
The rain is only sad
It does not lure you to the porch
To sit and watch it fall
With no moonlight as a torch
Your brother's room is empty
He does not live here anymore
Only silence and dust emits
From the dark room next door
A cold draft chills your feet
And the sheets are crisp and cold
The darkness feels vast
And sleep you cannot get ahold
The death date of your uncle
Grows ever so near
It's on the night of Halloween
No longer filled with joy and cheer
A certain friend with bright eyes
Crosses your mind once hourly
You have not spoken in a while
It's him you'd have liked to see
When it was six thirty three
And you were waking all alone
In this October rain
That chilled you to the bone
But only old pictures and faces
Came along with you
Your dog even stayed home
To avoid this melancholy too
It is a pensive and silent evening
Imagined warmth remains
But it cannot warm your sad heart
During October rain.
