Eyes don't lie

08

"I like the weather today, it's not too hot for August," Donghyuck announced while Jeno and him were walking home, as they were living in the same direction.

"Hmm," Jeno retorted, a bit lost in thought.

They were silently continuing their stroll when Jeno suddenly stumbled over a paving stone that was not well incorporated, almost losing balance but eventually being able to regain steadiness.

"What was that!?," Donghyuck laughed, watching Jeno recover from the stress caused by his fall. He had to laugh too, seeing Donghyuck being so amused.

"Thanks for trying to catch me," he grumbly said, with Donghyuck still laughing.

Of course he didn't really mean that. But Donghyuck answered anyways.

"If you really fell, I would have caught you", he told Jeno and gave him a smile before they were starting to head home again. Jeno couldn't help but smile too at those words, though trying to control his expression.

"Uh, for the new psychology project that Mrs. Lim is going to send us more information about..where should we meet up to do it?," Donghyuck questioned while they were crossing the street, kicking a pebble randomly lying on the middle of the lane.

"We could go to mine, next Tuesday," Jeno meant watching the pebble go flying on the pavement.

"It's on your way home plus my mom loves you and you can stay for dinner after we've done it," he added.

"If I get to eat your mother's food, this is a deal," Donghyuck excitedly said, clearly satisfied with the suggestion. Jeno chuckled at that and fought the urge to give the small adorable person next to him a firm hug.

"Then we have that set," he concluded contently.

The older boy was glad that Donghyuck didn't mind staying at his place, it was important to Jeno that he didn't feel uncomfortable there. Jeno's whole family liking Donghyuck might be a huge factor in that.

Even though Donghyuck's family was always very friendly and welcoming, Jeno couldn't help but feel on edge every time because for him, having to talk to other people's parents, that meant well but often started bombarding you with questions and cracking bad jokes, was one of the most stressful situations. Perhaps, the fact that he felt like Donghyuck's dad knew about his feelings for his friend, alias the man's son, was also something which didn't feel very inviting. Gosh, Jeno didn't want to remember Donghyuck's father's stares once when he had come home during the evening and the two friends had been cuddling on the couch, watching a film. After that day, he had been avoiding running into the middle-aged man when he was paying Donghyuck a visit.

When Donghyuck was spending time at his home, he would feel much more relaxed and sometimes also initiate skin-ship. His mom was also lovely but more on the calm side, so she barely disturbed the two when they were hanging out, which Jeno appreciated because having one of your parents watching you interact with your friend, or in Jeno's case, crush, might be one of the weirdest things in his opinion. Like there was no way he'd hug Donghyuck in front of his parents, that'd just be..awkward as hell.

Soon they reached Jeno's house and stopped, looking at each other before saying a quick goodbye.

"Don't forget to tell your mom I'm coming so that she can prepare me the best kimchi on the world," Donghyuck lastly commented.

"I'll do, spoiled boy," Jeno answered while waving his hand a last time.

"You still love me," Donghyuck yelled, as he was already some meters away, and winked before turning around.

"Not sure about that," Jeno shouted back grinning, pretending the other boy's wink hadn't made his heart jump, while he was taking the last steps to the front door.

"Yes, I still do," he thought, contrary to his words. Oh, how he sometimes wished he could actually say those words out loud..

———————————-

Arrived in his room, after having greeted his mom and given her a short recap about the day, Jeno threw himself on his bed lazily, resting there motionlessly. His head was full again, it never seemed to calm down. If there had been a chance to stop his brain from thinking all the time, he would gladly have taken it. But Jeno was a classical over thinker and thoughts were haunting him daily, 24/7.

He was already looking forward way too much to their meet-up next week. Only thinking about it made him smile and at the same time frustrated.

Still, there was no use in feeling somewhat sad, he told himself, so he stood up and looked around his room, contemplating on what to do to distract himself. When Jeno had decided that he would finish some schoolwork, his phone received a notification for an incoming message.

Half-interested he clicked on the small text which Mark had sent into their group chat.

Sleepover at mine on Saturday is set?

Renjun had already answered with a short Yes!, and Donghyuck had also agreed with a definitely, can't wait for it! ^^

Jeno sighed quietly, not really ready for third-wheeling as always but then he reminded himself that those four lovable and funny boys were still his friends he enjoyed spending time with. Looking at the situation in that way made his mood lighten and he felt stupid for forgetting a bit that this was how it had been in the past. They all had started as friends and grown closer with time. And yes, the circumstances had changed but they still were five boys that got along very well.

Jeno couldn't help but wonder if he wished things were like they used to be. He really couldn't tell. Maybe he did. Though he couldn't say that his feelings hadn't changed how he interacted with them either, so seeing it like that would have been unfair.

Again, he was overthinking, so he quickly shook his head as if that would make the flood of ideas disappear.

Yeah, works for me too, he typed in and put his phone away with a smile.

The idea for sleepover  just came up randomly, haha. Like I don't know what's going to happen there yet but we'll see. Also, the way this is supposed to be in summer because of Jaemin's birthday but in my head I imagine autumn while writing the scenes.. (,:

As always though, thank you for reading! ^^
