Eyes don't lie

12

The next morning all of the friends said goodbye to each other after having eaten breakfast and cleaning the place. Mark's parent's would come home from their business trip at late noon and probably have some quality time with their sons, Mark's older brother who was living in his own apartment also coming over. That's why the five boys wouldn't be spending the day together.

Though Donghyuck and Jeno decided to meet up. Both of them had no plans for Sunday, so Jeno suggested that they do their psychology project today instead of Tuesday so that they could get over with it. The other boy had disagreed at first until he was called out by Jaemin for being lazy. Honestly, it was not true as Donghyuck was pretty hard-working if he wanted to but the youngest still loved attacking his ego. Also, it worked because Donghyuck agreed to Jeno's idea after that. Perhaps hanging out with Jeno was an additional bonus leading him to part ways with the others three with Jeno by his side.

"I already informed my mother you're visiting us, she said she would cook your favorite dish," Jeno told Donghyuck while they were entering the bus to drive back into town.

"Oh god, why did you do that? I appreciate it, of course, but I don't want her to feel stressed or anything!," Donghyuck reacted whining, a bit worried he was making things complicated. Jeno realizing that calmed him down quickly.

"Hey, don't think that, she's more than happy that you're coming. And she has already bought the ingredients for the meal so it's not a problem or inconvenience," he reassured his friend soothingly and followed him to two empty seats at the back of the vehicle.

"Then thanks, I guess, and I'm looking forward to it," the other boy stated and a smile made its way onto his beautiful face, Jeno's heart pounding at the sight.

They sat down and listened to music the entire way until the bus stop they had to get off, sharing Donghyuck's earphones. The music Donghyuck liked to listen to wasn't what Jeno would put in his playlist but listening to the bubbly and happy melodies had a nice feeling to them this day. He also didn't mind as long as Donghyuck got to listen to the songs he liked. His happiness was also Jeno's happiness.

Only three other passengers were riding the bus, an elderly-looking woman standing and two girls sitting at the front, constantly laughing about something they were watching on one girl's phone, which Jeno assumed was tiktok. Watching them was amusing and made Jeno smile as he glanced at them every now and then and listened to the music. Observing them cracking up and making unintentional skin-ship, though not seeming bothered by it at all, he wondered what impression he and Donghyuck made on other people. Did they look close like those girls too?

After overthinking for a while, he just decided on looking out of the window, enjoying the view of trees and yellow fields passing by before the route of the bus was leading through more urban districts as they left the suburbs. On the light blue sky, no clouds were seen, only the sun shining brightly. Some warm breeze coming in from one opened window and gently stroking the boys' skin completed the lazy summer forenoon atmosphere. It was so peaceful and comfortable that Jeno wished the bus ride would never end. He would have loved to stop the time at this right moment, with this treasured person in such a pleasant environment.

But soon, too soon, Jeno found, they arrived at the stop nearest to Jeno's home and stumbled out of the bus, warm summer air hitting them.

"Whoa, I almost forgot that it was August because of how could it was with all the air conditioning in the bus," Donghyuck commented when they had stepped out, looking dissatisfied as he wasn't a big fan of heat.

"Were you cold? I could have lent you my hoodie," Jeno answered to that, wrinkling his eyebrows.

"Nah, it's fine, I'll make it obvious if I want your jacket next time," Donghyuck meant and made a placating gesture as they started heading off, the bus on the road surpassing them only after a few steps.

"It's so hotttt," Donghyuck complained for the nth time while they were walking next to one another, letting out a sigh as they needed ten minutes to arrive yet.

And it was true, the sun on this Sunday noon was mercilessly burning down onto the friends. If they had bought themselves an ice cream, it would have completely melted in less than 2 minutes. Unfortunately there was no other path for them to take besides walking on the sidewalk, so no shadows created by trees to hide from the direct sunlight. Like in the bus, they didn't spot many people, many probably avoiding facing the heat by staying inside. Even if it was definitely a torture being outside under this weather, Jeno was getting slightly annoyed by his friend complaining every sole minute, not like he wasn't freaking sweating or enjoying the hotness either.

"Then just undress your shirt," he answered dryly and slightly pulled Donghyuck's tee up in a swift motion, immediately letting it fall again to tease the other one.

The younger was kinda caught off guard, definitely stunned because it took some time before he was ready to give a witty answer.

"That's what you'd like, me to do hmm?," he said kinda smugly and mockingly grinned at Jeno, whose turn it was to be speechless now.

Yeah, he was panicking inside for a second.

Though he very quickly caught himself, calmly answering, "If you want to see it that way..." and casually brushing his sweaty hair back, looking at Donghyuck while doing so, who for a moment stared at the older's movement before adverting his gaze.

Donghyuck's cheeks were burning. Gosh, it really was too hot today!

Hmm, I feel like I actually managed to get the summer feeling/ atmosphere across? I hope so but I can tell you that I felt it and I now badly want to sit in a bus during summer time and all that haha.. (,:
