Eyes Don't Lie

19

The day of Jaemin's 19th birthday was like hell for Renjun. Okay, for both boys actually.

In the morning meeting each other at school, the two pretended everything was fine, Renjun congratulating the younger with a smile, although his inner nervousness numbing all his senses and even overtaking his body physically because his stomach was slightly hurting from the stress he was feeling.

Jaemin wasn't in a better shape, although on the outside he was grinning and receiving the gratulations he got from a few people and later on his class which Donghyuck was at fault at for spreading around the news of his birthday, as a result the teacher thinking it would be a wholesome idea to let the students sing a birthday song dedicated to the boy, who wanted to burst out of the room, to get away from this embarrassing situation. Oh, did Donghyuck get his scolding by Jaemin himself later on!

Still, Jaemin's nerves couldn't ease, even when his friends surprised him with self-made cupcakes, their icing applied slightly sloppy, though he guessed it was the gesture that counted. His silent inner rants didn't end even when Renjun got some of the icing on his cheek after he had bitten into one, looking oddly adorable, a sight that would normally occupy his whole mind.

Today, it was worry that was persistently keeping him anxious, washing away the joy you would probably experience on a birthday you spend with your friends..

Obviously, the three others could feel the thickening tension which lay in the air but were helpless about what to do. Hell, Jeno himself felt so freaking restless too! Donghyuck's witty jokes couldn't light up the awkward atmosphere and Mark's clumsiness didn't evoke as many laughters as always. Their lunch break was filled with silence, nobody really knowing what to say or talking about incidental matters which no-one had an actual interest in.

The worst for Renjun was the moment the end of the school day came.

At around 16:25 o'clock, the school bell rang, dismissing the last class. Students used to love that sound, announcing freedom and fun, but today, it evoked a grim emotion in Renjun. He felt sick and as if he was being overdramatic at the same time.

The time for his name to appear somewhere on Jaemin's body was running out. Which put him under immensely much stress.

Quickly, he said a rushed goodbye to his friends, wishing Jaemin a good birthday again, before he stormed home, not wanting anyone else see him freaking out about the whole thing. When he arrived at his family's apartment sweating, the first thing he did was shut the door to his room with a loud tug and throw himself on his bed, hiding his face in the pillow.

It took Renjun a while to figure out where the ringing tone of his phone came from. The boy sleepily woke up from the tired state he had been in since he had arrived home- with the goal of sleeping the worries away. Now that the noise had abruptly teared him from sleep, he felt strongly awakened, getting up carefully and scurrying over to his backpack in which his phone was buzzing endlessly.

Just as he was reaching for it, the ring tone stopped, making the boy irritated. Nevertheless, he took it out of his backpack and having checked the time -it was already 23:51 o'clock- unlocked his device to check whoever had been calling him.

His eyes widened when he noticed Jaemin's contact and multiple missed calls and without much hesitation, he pressed onto the green telephone symbol to call the other back. Renjun directly regretted that as he was not mentally prepared for whatever the other guy would have to say. Because, this was obviously about the soulmate thing, you didn't even have to be a delusional person to think that far. Also, Jaemin had promised him that he would tell him about his tattoo as soon as possible a few months ago. Oh, how hopefully his heart had fluttered back then...
