When my sister smiles, her smile reaches her eyes. She could brighten anyone's day with just her smile. However, after a spending a few seconds in her presence, my excitement died, she looked sad, and what worried me most was that she came without her baby, and Ivy never went anywhere without Angel.
We sat down for breakfast, and I waited until our food arrived before bringing up the topic. "Ivy, how are things back home?"
Her lips stretched into a grimace. "Uhm... YV, let's just eat first," she said, already looking as if I'd made her mood ten times worse. "Mama kicked me out on the night of the wedding," she finally said.
"WHAT? And you are only telling me this now? Where are you currently staying?" I bombarded.
"Yvonne, calm down, okay. I'm fine, I moved in with Sipho." My forehead creased in confusion. The Ivy I know would be over the moon at the opportunity to finally move in with her man, what changed? "I know what you are thinking, why am I not happy? I am, truly. It's just that I'd hoped it would be under different circumstances. Everything happened so fast, it's been stressful. I'm having a difficult time adjusting to the new place, especially with the baby... I haven't had time to unpack my things. Angel cries all the time, and Sipho's family says they need to perform a welcoming ceremony for her."
"Gosh, Sis... I'm so sorry. Did Mama find out that you helped me?" She did not have to answer that, it was way too obvious. "I'm so sorry, Ivy. I know none of this would be happening if it weren't for me."
"Stop it! It's not your fault, this was bound to happen sooner or later. Mama has been looking for a reason to throw me out since I fell pregnant. I don't blame you, so you shouldn't blame yourself either, as a matter of fact, if I had to do this again, I wouldn't hesitate."
I nodded even though my spirits were dampened. "Okay. Should we order more drinks?"
She breathed a heartfelt laughter, and for the first time since the day started, her eyes sparkled joyfully. "Does your baby like cranberry juice?" She teased.
"I'm not sure what he likes or doesn't like yet?"
"He?" Her eyebrows quirked.
I tilted my head from side to side. "I don't know yet. But I'm hoping it is a boy."
"Can I ask why?"
My cheeks burned, and I glanced away. How was I supposed to tell her that the reason I wanted a boy is because I'm hoping he is the exact replica of his father so that he finally realises that he is not a monster?
I think that has been Silas' greatest punishment and challenge, believing that he was the monster in kids' nightmares and that he doesn't deserve anything good in his life.
I shrugged. "Well, you already have a girl. It only makes sense for me to have a boy in order to balance the equation," I finally said when I realised that Ivy was still waiting for my answer.
She smiled, taking a final sip of her drink. "That makes perfect sense. For a moment I thought you were going to say that you want a boy because you are hoping he looks like his dad. I was ready to say that you are in love." I gave her a puzzled look, and she laughed and then quickly sat up straight, her eyes lighting up the way they always did when she had hot gossip. "Speaking of love, you won't believe what happened at your wedding." Oh boy! "While everyone was still waiting for the bride, your fiancé's boyfriend showed up at the wedding and caused a scene."
I looked around to see if anyone was listening, and then I leaned forward, my head swirling in confusion. "When you say boyfriend-"
"Turns out the reason the Ramodisa's were so desperate for Gift to get married, was to hide the fact that their precious son is gay."
