Back at the Opera House

The managers

The managers were walking up the stairs. "Mystery after gala night" It says, "Mystery of Sopranos Flight" "Mystified, baffled," Surete say "We are mystified, we suspect foul play." "Bad news, on soprano scene. First Carlotta, now Jasmine. Still at least the seats get sold. Gossips worth its weight in gold."

"What a way to run a business. Spare me these unending trials. Half your cast disappears but the crowd still cheers. Opera to hell with Gluck and Handel. It's a scandal that'll pack 'em in the aisles." said one manager. The other one came and said "Damnable. Will they all walk out? This is damnable!" said Andre.

"Andre, please don't shout. It's publicity, and the take is vast. Free Publicity" whispered Firmin. "But we have no cast" repeated Andre. "But Andre, have you seen the queue?" asked Firmin. "Oh, it seems you've got one, too."

"Dear Andre, what a charming gala. Jasmine enjoyed a great success. We were hardly bereft when Carlotta left. Otherwise, the chorus was entrancing. But the dancing was a lamentable mess."

"Dear Firmin, just a brief reminder. My salary has not been paid. Send it care of the ghost by return of post. P.T.O.: no one likes a debtor. So it's better if my orders are obeyed."

They roll their eyes.

"Who would have the gall to send this? Someone with a puerile brain." "These are both signed "O, G".  said Firmin. "Who the hell is he? Opera Ghost" they both said.  "It's really not amusing" said Firmin. "He's abusing our position." said Andre. "In addition, he wants money" responded Firmin.  "He's a funny sort of specter. To expect a large retainer. Nothing plainer. He is clearly quite insane." they both said.

Then Raul showed up. "Where is she?" he asked. "You mean Carlotta?" asked Firmin. "No, I mean Miss Daae" responded Raul. "Where is she?" he asked again. "Well, how should we know?" they both asked. "I want an answer." Raul demanded. "I take it that you sent me this note?" "What's with all this nonsense?" asked Andre. "Of course not." responded Firmin. "Don't look at us." they both said. "She's not with you then?" asked Raul. "Of course not." said Andre. "We're in the dark." said Firmin.

"Monsieur, don't argue, isn't this the letter you wrote?" asked Raul. "And what is it that we're meant to have written?" asked Firmin. Andre took the note from Raul and started reading it.

"Do not fear for Miss Daae. The Angel of music has her under his wing. Make no attempt to see her again."

"If you didn't write it, who did? asked Raul.

Then the Diva with her entourage stormed in with a note.

"Where is he?" she asked. "Ah, welcome back," said Andre. "Your precious Patron, where is he?" Colatta asked again. "What is it now?" asked Raul. "I have your letter, a letter which I rather resent." she told them. "And did you send it" everyone asked Raul. "Of course, not" he responded. "As if he would" responded Andre. "You didn't send it?" asked Colatta. "Of course, not" responded Raul. "What's going on?" the managers asked. "You dare to tell me that this is not the letter you sent?" she asked. "And what is it that I'm meant to have sent?" asked Raul taking the letter and starting to read it.

"Your days at the Opera Populaire are numbered. Jasmine Daae will be singing on your behalf tonight. Be prepared for a great misfortune. Should you attempt to take her place."

"Far too many notes for my taste and most of them are about Jasmine. All we've heard since we came is Miss Daae's name." said the managers.

Madame Lesch and Rachel appeared. "Miss Daae has returned. I trust her midnight oil is well and truly burned?" said Madame Lesch. "Where precisely is she now?" asked Firmin. "I thought it best that she went home" told Madame Lesch. "She needed rest" responded Rachel. "May I see her?" asked Raul. "No Monsieur, she will see no one." answered Madame Lesch. "Will she sing?" everyone asked.

"Here I have a note" she told them. "Let me see it" everyone said. "Please" said Andre taking the note.
