It’s been awhile since Jasey had visited her childhood home. She has avoided that home as best as she could since she moved out. It’s not that she doesn’t want to see her mother, she loves her mother, it’s just the pictures and flashbacks she gets whenever she’s there that scares her. That harsh look in her father’s eyes, the way he dragged his suitcases down the stairs, the way he abused her mother, the way he slammed the front door, hard enough to make the pictures around the door crooked. Jasey shudders. She shakes her head, trying to make the pictures disappear. Her father is a part of her past she should never revisit.
It is hard on Jasey to gather the will to go there, but it’s been such a long time and her mother had basically begged her to come. Jasey doesn’t want to let her down, she misses her just as much as her mother misses Jasey, and that feeling is so much bigger than the fear of the memory that place holds. Her father is no longer there, Jasey will not witness her mother being hit or yelled at, she will not see the heated argument in the leaving room, she will not see her father’s cold eyes. But still, she gets those weird, unnerving feelings once she steps on the doorway. Not from her memory, but it feels real. Call it a hunch, if you will. It’s weird; it’s worrying. Jasey steps up, knocking on the door, slowly at first and getting more and more frantic for each passing minute. Her mother should have waited for her, she has told her that she’s coming, where is she…Jasey tries to push the door, it’s unlocked. Something’s not right; she can feel it in her bones.
“Mom?” Jasey calls with no answer. She can hear the radio playing; the music fills in the quietness and the emptiness of the house.
Jasey searches the living room, her bedroom; the bathroom, everything’s empty. She looks for the kitchen and when she sees what’s in front of her, she almost feel like everything inside her is dying. She sees her mom sprawled on the kitchen’s floor, her hair tossed aside. Jasey kneeled down, turning her mom so that she faces her, checking her pulse. She can barely feel it. Jasey holds back her tears, swallowing her fears. She reaches her phone, quickly dialing the emergency number. Stay with me, she whispers to her mom, stay with me…

Jasey slides down from the wall, she sits outside the room where her mother is lying. The doctor is working on her…she repeats…she’ll be all right. She clutches on her phone, having nothing else to keep her busy. She curses to herself, if only she has come faster…if only she hasn’t took that damned detour just for a taco…if only she has woken up earlier, she might have found her mother earlier, maybe that would help. But the doctor is working on her; she’ll be all right, Jasey repeats like it’s a mantra that would help her mom back to health. Jasey had called Alex when she’s on her way to the hospital; she had instinctively called him at the state of panic. Alex helped her to maintain her composure and he has stayed with her on the phone, at least until her phone died. But she needs Alex right now; she needs his company, his presence next to her, not just his voice through the phone. She needs his comfort. Her thoughts then come back to her mom. She has to make it, she pleads silently to whoever can listen to her. She has to be healthy again.
“Jasey…”
Jasey almost bursts out crying when a hand reaches out to her. She leaps to her feet, burying herself inside Alex’s arms.
“Shh, it’s okay, they will help her, she’ll be alright” Alex strokes her hair, holding her inside his arms. He guides her to the nearest seat.
“But…I should have came there sooner” Jasey sobs, her fears are coming out. What if her mom couldn’t make it?
“She’ll be alright…” is all Alex manages to say, but Jasey doesn’t mind. As long as he’s here, as long as she doesn’t have to be alone, she doesn’t need words; she only needs his presence around her.
