“ALEX”
Jasey calls out, slamming the door open, revealing Alex’s shocked face with cereal milk dripping from his chin.
“Jasey” he glares, wiping the milk away.
“You have to help me,” she hisses, putting her bag down on the breakfast bar.
“It’s my lazy day” Alex points out to his old t-shirt, loose sweatpants, fluffy slippers, and messy bed-hair.
“Not now!” she sighs dramatically.
“Okay….” He raises his brow
“I want you to be my boyfriend,” she points out, staring intently at him. Alex chokes on her request, almost blurting out his cereal.
“What…” Alex’s jaw drops open
“Not real boyfriend! Fake boyfriend”
“Why do you even need a fake boyfriend?” he continues munching his cereal.
“Um…I may have kind of lied…” she sits in front of him, twiddling her thumbs, looking guilty.
“Interesting” he adds, “tell me more about this lie of yours”
“So…you remember Matt don’t you?”
Alex nods, not having any idea to where the conversation might go.
“Well, he came to me earlier and then we had lunch together and we talked a lot and long story short, Meg said that he was interested in me…” by this point Alex’s face hardened.
“But I thought that she was just joking. Um…and then when I was in the lift he asked if I had a boyfriend…” her cheeks flustered red, looking at Alex under her lashes, “And I said I have a boyfriend recently…and he asked for the name…and…well…I said that you are my boyfriend…”
Alex smirked, “why, am I always in your mind?”
Jasey hits him slightly on his arm. His smile grew wider, “Okay, and then why do you need me to act as your boyfriend?”
“Well that’s the thing. I thought after I said your name he would be convinced and he would back up but…I think he isn’t convinced enough…”
----
-A couple hours ago-
“Alex” Jasey stated, trying to keep her face as straight and as innocent as possible despite the cold sweat crippling her forehead.
Matt looked at her, his brow creased, like he wasn’t convinced on what she said. But maybe that’s only his ego talking, he didn’t want to admit that he lost right away.
“Oh, he’s the guy that picked you up from the bar, right?” he tried to regain his composure.
“Yeah” Jasey nodded, she doesn’t know what Matt is going to ask next and it is kind of scary. It’s true what people say about how a single white lie could end up becoming a huge spiral of lies and Jasey wasn’t used to that. Sure she had lied before but her lies was harmless and controllable whereas this lie is unpredictable.
“He said he’s just your friend?” he tried to be casual, confident in himself.
“Well, we’ve been friends for a very long time” this one is true, “and it turns out that we had feelings for each other and we haven’t realized it before” the lie had begun,
“So after I woke up that day after the bar thingy, we revealed to each other that we cared for each other in a more than friends kind of way…” this is getting so cheesy, “so he said that he loves me and he wanted to be more than friends and I accepted right away since the feeling was obviously mutual…”
“And here we are then, after years of friendship” she gave him a fake dreamy smile, a smile from a girl in love.
Matt’s face drop and Jasey almost felt sorry for him. She even thought about saying that she was just joking and she’s single but she really didn’t want Matt to feel like he had hope because Jasey really didn’t want anything to do with people who went to the same office as hers.
Halfway down the office, the lift opened again. Meg’s face came into view with her mouth making a big ‘O’
“Hi guys” she stepped in, Jasey felt grateful for her presence. She just didn’t know that Meg would only make the spiral of lie bigger.
“What were you guys talking about?” she smiled, trying to lighten up the tense feeling inside the lift.
“Do you know that Jasey has a boyfriend recently?” Matt chimes in,
“I didn’t know…” Meg turned to Jasey, “Why didn’t you tell me?” she glared at her. Jasey gulped, “well…I thought it wasn’t important so…”
“Why don’t you ask him to come hang out with us?” Meg suggested and Jasey almost strangle her right then and there.
“You didn’t even know his name…” Jasey tried to keep the conversation away from inviting Alex because she really doesn’t want to involve him in any of this.
“I can guess…Alex isn’t it?”
How did she know?
“Why don’t you invite him to hang with us?” Meg asked again. Jasey switched from Meg to Matt and from Matt to Meg. Matt looked at her passively, looking as though he was anticipating Jasey to admit that she was lying, or maybe that’s just the paranoid side of Jasey talking.
“There is nothing interesting, really…” Jasey tried again. Meg’s attention turned to Matt, “what about a double-date?” she smiled ever so sweetly.
Oh. That’s her game. Jasey almost giggled, Meg just wanted to take the chance to go on a date with Matt.
“That’s not a bad idea. You would be my date, eh?” Matt asked
“Obviously” Meg chimed, “So…Jasey?”
“Fine, I’ll ask Alex…” Jasey cursed to herself.
-----
“SO that’s the story” Jasey finishes off, finding herself clinging on Alex’s arm as he washes the bowl.
Alex glances at her side-ways, “you have a really interesting friend there you know”
“I’m sorry okay…but please can you help me? I’m sure Meg knows how you looked like” Jasey follows him around, not letting go off her hold to his arms.
“What is it for me?” Alex drags her to his lazy couch.
“I will give you extras” Jasey smirked as Alex takes sharp breaths.
“Uh…fine…I will be your fake boyfriend”
Jasey cheered, pecks Alex’s cheek and happily mumbling a song as she opens up his food cabinet.
