You sit across from Wally, the two of you lounging on the couch, the conversation light and easy—until he starts talking about last night. You laugh at first, pretending it's no big deal, because that's what friends do, right? You tease him about the girl he kissed, asking playful questions about how it happened, and what she was like.

But as Wally keeps going, describing how he stayed over at her house, the smile on your face begins to feel more and more forced. Your stomach twists into a tight knot, the sensation of nausea creeping up as he recounts the details, unaware of the effect his words are having on you.

"We're just friends, right?" you say, trying to keep your voice steady, as if repeating it will somehow make it true, make it easier to hear about the girl he kissed last night. "Like we've been, right?"

Wally doesn't notice the strain in your voice. He grins, oblivious, and continues talking, his eyes lighting up as he remembers the night. Every word he says feels like a punch to your gut, but you nod along, pretending to listen, even though all you want to do is run out of the room.

You should be happy for him, you think, but instead, all you can do is fight the urge to throw up, the sick realization sinking in that maybe, just maybe, you're not as okay with being "just friends" as you thought you were.

You force a laugh, trying to shake off the uneasy feeling in your stomach as Wally keeps talking.

He's your ride-or-die, always has been, so there's no way you're jealous, right? You keep telling yourself that, trying to convince yourself that the way you feel about him is just black and white, nothing complicated. He's your best friend, and that's all there is to it.

But as Wally continues, his voice fading into the background, your mind starts to wander. You haven't been staying up late, lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, overthinking the way he makes you feel, right? You definitely haven't been tripping all over these feelings, replaying every moment you've spent together, wondering if maybe there's something more there. That would be dumb, you think, shaking your head as if to clear the thoughts.

You lean back against the couch, trying to act casual like the idea of him being with someone else doesn't bother you in the slightest.

"You know, it's funny," you say, forcing a grin, "how you and I are just... simple, no gray area, no mess."

Wally glances at you, a little confused by your sudden comment, but he just chuckles. "Yeah, exactly. We're solid. No drama."

You nod, swallowing hard, the words almost catching in your throat. "So, no big deal if you're into someone else. It's not like I'm losing sleep over it or anything."

He laughs again, but there's something about the sound that makes your chest tighten. "Of course not. We're just friends. You've got nothing to worry about."

"Right," you echo, but your mind betrays you, replaying the moments you've caught yourself staying up late, thinking about the way his smile makes your heart skip a beat, or how his touch lingers on your skin longer than it should.

You want to believe it's just black and white, no complications, no feelings to trip over. But the more you try to convince yourself, the more you realize that maybe you're not as okay with this as you thought you were. Maybe, just maybe, you've been fooling yourself all along.
