Toni has been serving in the army and finally is allowed to come home. For good.

Cheryl presses a feather-light kiss to her son's forehead as the toddler snuggles further into his Spiderman duvet. The Topaz boy peeks one sleepy eye open in playful banter inducing his mother to chuckle. "Sleep, my love."

"I no tired, Mommy. We go play wiwth Sol!" Elias begins to pull the blanket away from his tiny body and Cheryl quickly moves to stop him.

"Baby, Sol is going to sleep, kay? And so are you."

Elias pouts slightly, turning his head away from the redhead. She sighs while moving to sit beside him. "What's wrong, bud, why don't you want to sleep?"

Her fingers softly tussle his auburn locks and his light brown eyes meet her blue ones. The look on his little face reminds her of her deployed wife. It makes her heartache.

When Toni met Cheryl, it was like all the stars in her world aligned. In high school, they were the IT couple and everyone envied the love and respect the two shared for each other. Everything in their world made sense and when Cheryl became pregnant with Melodie, their first daughter, in college, the brunette knew she had to step up to provide for her family.

It first started with Toni enlisting in the Army. The opportunity paid well, took care of her college finances and she continued to live at home, helping her wife raise Melodie. Then, when their daughter turned three, Toni joined the force entirely. Cheryl never truly understood why, but she stood by her girl no matter what.

It wasn't until Melodie turned six that their second girl, Solana, was born. Solàna means "Sunshine" in Spanish. The name came from Toni's abuela, just before the woman passed.
They'd never seen Melodie so excited about anything and becoming a big sister was definitely something she was made for.

Toni was discharged for a while, resulting in Elias' arrival. The couple had made up for much lost time in such a short breadth if you know what I mean.

And now it brings us here, the aforementioned woman is deployed in another country, and has been for almost a year now. She calls and keeps in touch, it's enough to tame Cheryl's fears but not enough to help their babies understand why she's not around. But she never fails to remind them how much Toni loves them and wishes to be home soon.

It's all she ever says in her monthly letters.

"I not tired, Mommy," he repeats.

"Considering that you were cuddled up in your blanket, I'd have to disagree."

Sometimes Elias gives her a hard time during tuck-in. Which is why she always tucks him in last, just so her girls will have their nightly dose of love instead of waiting. Melodie and Solana never give her a challenging time, although Mel is a teenager and Sol is much older than Elias.

"Come on, bub, time to sleep." she goes to tuck the boy in once more, lightly brushing his curls away from his watering eyes. She huffs quietly at the sight. "Baby, what's wrong?"

"I miss Mama." his lip quivers as he speaks, little fingers reaching up to rub his stinging eyes. Cheryl knew it was coming. Hell, she saw it from a mile away, however, it didn't prepare her for the ache inflicted in her chest upon seeing her son's tears.

Because God, does she miss Mama as well.

"I know, my love." Cheryl climbs into the small toddler bed, hauling the red/blue blanket over the both of them. She pulls Elias into her frame and cradles the back of his head. "I miss Mama too, Eli."
