Ruth trembled as Dane stepped closer. Her chin jutted out in defiance, but her body was shaking with fear.
"Such a pretty little parcel," Dane's large frame loomed over Ruth,"Like what you see, precious?"
Ruth couldn't help herself. She reached up and touched his face, the scales now gone, but his eyes were still a shimmering gold and aquamarine.
"Yes... .I think you'll do just fine, precious one... just fine indeed..."
Sebastian stepped between them and pushed Dane back
"My territory!!"
"Whatever you want to believe, Sebastian. You know damn well the caves are ours."
Sebastian scoffed, "You're delusional. Take a fucking hike before we end you."
"Big words for such a dying man," Dane rolled his eyes.
"Do you know anything about curses?" Keira piped up,"Ones that dead hags can't reverse?"
Dane peered around at Ruth again and smiled.
"Who's cursed?"
"You know damn well what happened to me, Dane," Sebastian rolled his eyes, "My mate is looking out for me."
Dane scratched his chin, his dark hair covering one eye.
"Yeah, yeah... but you need to figure out what's in it for me."
"Are you Prince Dane?" Ruth asked, not paying attention to the conversation.
"In the flesh, precious," Dane cupped Ruth's chin, pulling her face up to meet his gaze,"And you are... a beautiful one."
"Ruth."
"Get away from her, Dane... " Josette warned.
"A hag's curse must be reversed by the hag, but I hear that there are ways around it. "
" Like what? "Keira probed,"Please tell us! I beg you!"
Dane shrugged,"Ask a hag then!"
"They'd rather die than tell us, " Sebastian admitted.
Dane snickered,"Of course they would. Barter for gold?"
Sebastian growled as the howls from the wolves echoed around them.
"Tell you what," Dane snapped his fingers and smiled at Ruth,"Let me have her and I'll help you find a cure. "
"What?!" Keira yelped,"No, you, -"
"Yes," Ruth nodded, much to the astonishment of the crowd,"I'll go if you promise not to hurt anyone. "
"Even you?"
"Do you want to hurt me?"
Devonia didn't make a move. She was the mother witch, but in her heart something told her to allow Ruth to go.
"Get your things, precious.. " Dane licked his lips.
"No! Ruthie!" Keira grabbed Ruth by the arm and pulled her away from the crowd,"They can kill you without remorse! "
"So can satyrs and you're pregnant with his child!" Ruth whispered, "Let me do this. We could find a cure and I'd be the only witch among them."
Keira searched her friends face, looking passed her to Josette and Frances.
"You don't make any stupid moves, do you understand?"
"I do and I understand them," Ruth told her, "You know I do."
Sebastian and Dane were about the same height and build so when they stood toe to toe everyone hushed.
"If you hurt my mate's sister,-"
Dane waved him off and smiled, "If she wants me to cause her pain, I can show her a good time. Is that what you need, little precious? Some pleasure and pain?"
"Get the fuck out of my face, Dane,"Sebastian took a step back as he watched the other dragons from Saffron's Peak circle them.
"You're almost extinct anyway," Sebastian mumbled, eliciting a gasp from Ruth.
"Don't say that!" Ruth's eyes widened in order, "You mustn't.."
Keira helped carry Ruth's belongings back to Dane.
"Don't have that baby without me!"
"I don't think I will..." Keira looked up at Sebastian and rubbed her belly, "It takes,-"
"She's right. Your gestation will only be three to four months."
"Wh-what?!" Keira nearly fainted, "You didn't tell me that! I am a witch, though."
"Carrying a satyr."
Devonia chuckled as Vera jumped into Keira's arms before Keira stepped back into Sebastian's hold.
"I suddenly feel very faint. I guess our big wedding is off," she smiled.
"Nonsense. We can still have one if you wish," Sebastian said, "Anything your heart desires, dandelion."
"Without Ruthie?"
Ruth smiled, "You will be fine. I will be back soon! I can feel it."
She could also feel her raging hormones as Dane locked eyes with hers. She may as well have melted right then and there.
"I love you, Ruthie!"
Hugs and goodbyes were said and tears were shed while the crowd backed off as Dane handed Sebastian a gift of stone.
"Really? You greedy bastard," Sebastian scoffed.
"It's my ancestral stone, you asshole," Dane narrowed his eyes, "If I'm so greedy then I wouldn't have given you an amulet. It's for your child's protection."
"Protection from what?"
"Me."
With that, Dane transformed into his dragon—a black, shimmering scaled behemoth with sapphire eyes dipped in a little bit of crystal brim. His wings had green highlights and he took up half the courtyard.
"Let me help you," Sebastian said, raising Ruth and her belongings onto Dane, "Hold on tight, little witch, and you come back if anything happens. Use all the magic you can to fight them off—do you have a familiar?"
Ruth shook her head, "Not yet, but I know they're close."
"Good," Sebastian smiled, "Don't hesitate to kick some dragon ass."
"I won't," Ruth said, "You take care of that baby and my sister or I'll come after you myself."
