"This is a strange place," Keira said, shivering with a little fear, "I don't want to be here."
Sebastian tried hard to be as courageous as possible for his family, but he also felt a lot of trepidation.
"It is.." he agreed, "Emmett is well?"
"Oh, he's perfect," Keira smiled, "When you were holding him, I couldn't believe how natural you were, but it was such a blessing. You're a blessing, husband. I know you're going to be such a loving, wonderful father for the rest of our days."
"That's a long time, I hope," Sebastian said, "Even if we were able to stay in that cottage, I would have only missed the Shadow Realm just a wee bit."
"You truly mean that, don't you?"
"I truly do. You and Emmett are my world."
"I can't wait to be wrapped around you again," Keira whispered as Emmett awakened to be fed, "I feel like I need it."
Sebastian chuckled, "Already wanting to make another baby?"
"Maybe we can practice making a brother or sister for him."
"Oh, I like the sound of that, little weed."
They talked so much about their hopes and dreams for the future that neither one of them could feel the darkness closing in.
"I can't wait to setup camp," Keira yawned, "I am not cold out here, though. I need to figure out my powers."
"Same," Sebastian agreed, "We'll stop soon."
"Good," Keira said, "I'd like to eat and put Emmett down for the night."
"Is he already sleeping well?"
"For a newborn, he is surprisingly calm and collected," Keira smiled, "Were you that way?"
"I don't ever think I've been calm and collected," Sebastian joked, "Maybe he knows he's with two people who love him dearly."
"Oh, he's known that for a while. I can feel it."
"Let's get settled soon," Sebastian said, "I'm getting a little hungry."
They made sure the perimeter was as safe as they could make it before stopping for the night.
"This place is even scarier when the lights are gone...not one light out here," Keira held Emmett close as he slept peacefully in her arms, "Listen..."
"What?" Sebastian stopped tossing wood onto the fire and frowned, "I don't hear anything."
"Exactly.." Keira shivered, "There were sounds all around us today and when night fell..nothing."
Sebastian nodded, "The porridge will be done soon and so will this meat," he said, "May I hold him?"
"Of course! He's yours!"
Keira watched her husband handle the child gently, rocking him and smiling proudly.
"You did good, mate."
"We did good, mate," Keira said, "I,-"
A step—then another..
Sebastian didn't dare look around. He felt very little power left in him—as did Keira.
"Stay calm," he whispered, "Might just be a deer."
Keira nodded, "I'm..."
"It's alright to be scared, little dandelion," he told her, "You're the strongest woman I know.."
Keira linked her arm with his and pulled in closer.
"I don't hear it anymore."
"It's watching."
"Sebastian.."
"I can't do anything except press my physical strength against it," Sebastian said, kissing Emmett on the forehead and handing him back to his mother, "I'll stoke the fire on that side and keep watch—you stay here and watch my back."
Keira and Sebastian ate in silence as the night moved on.
They were able to get the fire out within a few hours and feed the horses, making a bed inside of the carriage.
"I'll take first watch," Sebastian told her, "You and Emmett sleep."
"Alright," Keira said, too tired to argue, "Just hold us."
Sebastian did just that, stroking her hair and running a finger over Emmett's face as he smiled at his father.
"Sweet dreams, family..."
Keira woke up with a start.
She was still holding Emmett to her, but Sebastian was nowhere to be found.
"Sebastian?"
She looked around the carriage as Emmett began to cry. It was morning. How could she sleep so long?! Why didn't Sebastian wake her?
Getting out of the carriage, panic set in as their encampment was destroyed.
"SEBASTIAN!!!"
Keira turned around and around, trying to make sense of what was going on.
"Sebastian.."
She looked to the carriage and noticed the horses were also gone.
He wouldn't have taken them.
He wouldn't have left.
The Dark Realm was a horrid place and now she knew why they were forced to stay there.
"GIVE HIM BACK TO ME!!" She sobbed, falling to her knees, "I LOVE HIM!"
