Why Can't We Be Friends

Why can't a boy take interest in

The things I do and say

Without the thought his listening

Will somehow "pave the way"

Why can't a girl give compliments

To boys she does not "like"

How dare her words be used to give

His self-esteem a spike!

Why can't a boy still hold a door

For one who's not his date

Without others assuming that

His love's up for debate

Why can't a girl wear something cute

'Cause she wants to look nice

Without some boy thinking that she'll

Be bought for the right price

And maybe it's a bit naive

To think this can be changed

I'll admit it's rather strange

But I am not deranged—

I just think life would be so great

If we'd all search for friends

The way we search for Eros love—

To the earth's very ends
